Abstract
367,048. Aircraft wing spars. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G. and LLOYD, J., Whitley, near Coventry. Nov. 20, 1930, Nos. 34931/30 and 21059/31. [Class 4.] A spar for an aircraft wing comprises booms of open channel section, with their open sides towards one another, connected together by bracing members each comprising open channel members riveted back to back, the ends of the bracing members fitting within the boom channels. Built up channel section booms 4, 5 of the section shown in Fig. 4 are connected by bracings 10, each comprising two channel section members riveted back to back and having their edges 12 outwardly flanged to enable them to be riveted to the sides of the booms. Where the bracings cross, one of them is cut away to allow the other member to pass between the cut ends which are connected by fishplates 14. Additional struts 16 are provided where necessary and where the stress is greatest two sets of cross bracing 17 are connected to struts 16 by gusset plates 18. Gusset plates 15 are used. where the stresses necessitate extra strength. Additional plates 9 may be added to the booms near the root of the wing, and towards the tip the closing plate of the channel members of each boom may be omitted. The edges of the booms may be braced together at intervals by channel members.
