Abstract
365,300. Fairings for aircraft struts. SHORT, A. E. and SHORT, H. O., Seaplane Works, Rochester, Kent. Jan. 5, 1931, No. 357. [Class 4.] A streamlined fairing, which can be applied to an aircraft strut without removing the strut, comprises a number of parts divided longitudinally, each part having on its inner surface transverse diaphragms with recesses to accommodate the strut. Figs. 1 and 2 show two halves a, c of a streamlined strut divided along its major axis. Transverse diaphragms b, d are riveted to each shell and have recesses b3, d<3> to fit the strut, the recesses d<3> having clips e for clamping around the strut. Inwardly turned flanges c<1>, c<2> are formed. on the part c and a similar flange a<1> is formed on the trailing edge of the part a which also has an extended front edge a<2> adapted to overlap the front of the part c when the fairing is assembled. Abutting flanges b<2>, d<2> are formed also on the diaphragms. Keyhole slots c<3> in the flanges c<1>, c<2> engage studs a<3> b4 on the flanges a<1>, b2 respectively, a relative longitudinal movement effecting the locking of the parts after which bolts are passed through holes a' and through the strut. The ends of the shell are cut at an angle as shown, flanged, and bent over to engage the strut.
