Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine having a sleeve valve B controlling inlet ports 11 and exhaust port 15 the inlet ports are fitted with check valves 12. Fig. 1 shows a Diesel engine air being supplied by a compressor 13 or from the crank case to a chamber 10 surrounding the cylinder, and entering the cylinder past the check valves 12 when the inlet ports are uncovered. A piston 1 on the sleeve valve serves to maintain the compression pressure in the cylinder as the main piston commences its down-stroke. In an explosion engine, a compressor is arranged between the carburettor and the inlet passages 11, the chamber 10 being omitted. In modifications, the compressor piston on the sleeve valve is omitted. Driving-gear.-The sleeve valve and compressor piston 1 are actuated by a pair of eccentrics 6 arranged with a lag behind the main crank.
