Abstract

320,066. Royce, F. H. April 10, 1928. Flywheels.-In the damped resilient driving- gear of an engine, one or more of the axiallymovable plates of the friction damper have each one or more integral or other axially-flexible radial extensions from the outer or inner periphery, one edge of the-or each-extension being fixed, as by clamping, to the driving or driven member, in order to avoid rotational slack. The forward end a of an internal-combustion engine crankshaft carries a starting-handle clutch c<8>, a fan-belt pulley c, an auxiliary damping-flywheel b, b<1>, and the driving-pinion l for the half-speed shaft, the parts c, l being respectively keyed and bolted to the flywheel, which is loose on the shaft- Springs e' bear on lugs e on the flywheel-half b' and on lugs d<4> on members d, d', secured to the shaft a and gripping betwen them one damping- disc h. A friction disc i is riveted to the part b<1>, and a presser-plate j<3>, pressed by springs k, is riveted to the inner edge of a corrugated, springy metal ring j, the outer edge of which is clamped between the flywheel-halves b, b<1>.
