Abstract
318,012. Elkington, V. March 5, 1928. Manhole frames and covers.- Rectangular manhole, grating, and like frames a are constructed in sections a<1>, a<2>, Fig. 2, united at the corners so that the bevelled seatings a' can be more readily machined. The sections are shown connected by bolts a<5>, Fig. 9, passing through mitred joints which have recesses f preferably undercut for the reception of lead or type metal poured in through suitable apertures to key the sections together. The cover b may also be formed in similar sections mitred together and connected by angle brackets d. The cooperating seats a<7>, b<1> on the frame and cover may have longitudinal grooves a<8>, b<4> filled with oil to form a water or gas seal. The cover is secured by a screw b<7> at one side and projections a<10> on the opposite side of the frame engaging recesses b<8> in depending projections b<6> on the cover. To facilitate the removal of the cover bv a rising lateral movement, the projections b<6> engage parallel and partly inclined rails a<9> on each side of the frame. The cover may be filled with concrete reinforced with wire e', Fig. 9, or wood blocks may be placed in cells in the cover. Figs. 13 and 14 show the invention applied to a gully grate.
