Insulating materials. - In electric insulating material consisting of layers of paper or woven fabric varnished on one side with insulating adhesive such as artificial resin, shellac, &c., and superposed, the side of the paper or fabric not varnished is coated with additional insulating medium such as oil, paraffin, or mixtures of hydrocarbons, asphalts, and resins. This additional material is preferably a compound that can be applied melted and that will penetrate the paper or fabric. It may be applied to the web by brushing or spraying while the latter is being wound into tubular shape. The fibrous material may be dried in a vacuum or by heating to about 100‹ C., and passed through a mist or vapour of the insulating medium. The latter may also be added to paper while in the form of pulp. The outer layer or layers of the finished material are preferably not impregnated.
