Abstract

309,350. Bianchi, V. L., and Francesconi, E. July 3, 1928. Aeroplanes ; planes, arrangement of; propelling ; steering.-A motor cycle is provided with an attachment for flying which can be detached to enable the cycle to be used independently, the propellers, wings, steering surfaces, and connections being mounted on a frame and entirely supported thereby. The wings are collapsable. As shown, a wing frame 11 is detachably secured by clamping elements 12, 13, 14 to the motor cycle frame 2. and supports the wing structures 19, 20 by means of a circular portion 17. At the fore end of the frame 11 a stabilizing plane 58 is mounted and at the rear end rudders 42. The wings 19 are mounted on members 23 capable of being moved along slots 24 by means of cables 28 wound on a drum 32, a second drum 34 serving for a cable 29 which is connected to pivoted ribs 21 which form with a covering 22 the collapsing wings. The edge 27 of the covering 22 is made to interlock with one of the ribs forming the rear edge of the wings 19. The drums 34 and 32 are rotated by a handle 36 and gearing which is so arranged to pay out and take up the required amount. The steering is carried out by a pair of horizontal surfaces 42 and a vertical rudder 43 mounted on a ball and socket joint 44 and moving as a single unit through the medium of cables 46, 47. The cables 46 are operated by moving the handle bars as in steering the cycle and the cables 47 are operated by moving the handle bars about a horizontal axis. The propeller 59 is driven from the motor 8 by driving means 61, bevel gearing 63, shaft 67 and preferably variable speed gearing 72.
