Abstract

Hinges.-For doors, windows and panel members an elastic material 3 such as indiarubber is interposed between the hinge pin 4 and the socket 7, the elastic material being caused to adhere strongly to the members 4, 7 by subjecting it to a relatively great initial deformation in order that the relative movement between the pin and socket members is obtained solely by the circular molecular deformation of the elastic material, transverse movements of the pin being permitted by radial deformation. The hinge shown in Fig. 2 is a section of the upper hinge of a vehicle door, the socket 7 being secured to the vehicle body and the pin 4 rotating with the plate 8 secured to the door. The material 3 is elongated during compression, and the ends may be left free or axially compressed by plates secured to the end of the socket 7. The lower hinge, shown in Fig. 3, has a central socket 8<1> and three rings 3 of elastic material deformed as previously described; or two rings may be used. In this hinge the pivot pin 4 is not rigidly secured to either of the flaps. Only the upper hinge may be provided with the deformed elastic ring. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the statement that the ring 3 may be given an initial torsion about the axis so that the door tends to open or close. Moreover, a hinge may also be constructed of two concentric tubes separated by indiarubber caused to adhere to each tube, the tubes being secured respectively to the hinged flaps; instead of effecting this adhesion by an initial deformation, the rubber may be vulcanised to the hinge pin, sockets or tubes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Specification 243,679 is referred to.
