279,118. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Shand, E. B.). Oct. 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Diaphragm valves; leakage, preventing. - A stop valve of the diaphragm packed type, more particularly for use in vacuum apparatus for mercury arc rectifiers, comprises a peripherally flanged casing member 7 having a centrally-disposed seat opening 6 and a side opening 8, a diaphragm peripherally soldered, at 17, to the flange 11, a valve head 23 carried by the diaphragm and preferably soldered thereto, at 25, and external operating means, such as the screwed stem 38 and the rotary nut 37. The joints of the connecting conduits and flanges are all welded to make vacuum tight joints. The flange 11 may be formed integral with the casing member 7 or separate therefrom, in which case a rubber, lead, &c. washer 27 forming the valve seating extends peripherally to make! the joint between the flange and casing, as shown. This washer is cemented to the casing.
