Abstract

A doped pigment and a paint are both disclosed for application to objects to allow measurement of their thermal histories. The paint comprises a doped pigment and a doped binder, which have luminescent profiles over two different temperatures ranges. The pigment may be Y:Si comprising ≤0.5 mol% Si and may comprise a rare earth and/or transition metal dopant, e.g. europium. The pigment may be (RExY1-x)2SiO5x, wherein RE is the rare earth or transition metal dopant and x may be 0.05-0.25. The binder may be an aqueous metal silicate solution. A method of fabricating a pigment for application to an object to allow measurement of its thermal history comprises gelling host precursors in a solvent to form a pigment gel, drying the pigment gel, and calcining the dried pigment gel. The host precursors may comprise yttrium precursors like Y(NO)3.6H2O, silicon precursors like Si(OC2H5)4, and dopant precursors like Eu(NO3)3.6H2O, EuCl3, or Eu(CH3CO2)3.xH2O.
