Abstract

A handheld fluid delivery device 1 comprising a housing 9, a removable or refillable fluid capsule 2, an atomiser 3 connected to a circuit 4, and apertures 12 through which atomised fluid leaves the device. A comb portion 7 may be removably attached, possibly via magnets 14, such that the atomised fluid may leave through apertures (30, fig.2A) in a base plate 13 and/or apertures (29, fig.1E) in a plurality of comb projections 8. The atomiser may be ultrasonic, with a piezoelectric element (22, fig.1G) on an angled plate (25, fig.1G) and a vibrating mesh (23, fig.1G). The device may include a battery 16 rechargeable via a charging station, a capsule identification chip, a cap 6, an LED (20, fig.1B), and a fan (28, fig.3A) for directing the atomised fluid through a housing tunnel (18, fig.1B). The device may be for hair misting, massaging, or applying skin products.

Description

HAIR MISTING APPARATUS FIELD AND BACKGROUND
[0001] The present invention relates particularly, but not exclusively, to a misting or atomizing device. For example, the misting device may be used for applying mist to hair or to other parts of the body.
[0002] Hair-misting devices are used to spray perfume into hair. In existing hair misting apparatuses, often too much liquid is applied to the hair. This can be the result of the misting device not misting the perfume enough. This can make the hair appear damp or greasy or, if the hair mist is scented, can result in an overpowering smell. Additionally, if too much liquid is applied to the hair, the hair may be weighed down causing the hair to lose its shape. Furthermore, existing devices may be difficult or uncomfortable to operate, particularly for self-application of the mist to the back of the head. This can lead to the mist inadvertently being directed at other parts of the body or clothes. This can be dangerous, for example if the mist is sprayed in the user's eyes. It can also be difficult for a user to apply an even coat of mist to his or her hair. Furthermore, the hair mist is often applied more to the outer layers of the hair without a satisfactory penetration of mist to the lower layers.
[0003] There is therefore a desire for a hair-misting device to be developed which applies a more even distribution of hair mist to the hair than in existing devices. There is also a need for a hair-misting device which is easier to operate. It is also desired to prevent waste of the product being misted and increase the efficiency of the misting process.
[0004] The inventors have developed a novel way to overcome these problems. A portable misting device has been developed which is able to apply an even coating of mist to the hair and throughout the layers of hair to the scalp without excess product being wasted. The device is easy to handle by a single user. Thus, the device can be operated by the user on themselves.
[0005] It will be recognised from the disclosure herein that the invention is also suitable for use in other applications. For example, the device could be used for applying products to skin. For example, the device may be used for applying treatment products to the skin of the body. Additionally, the device could be usable as a massage device.

[0006] Particular aspects and embodiments are set out in the appended claims.
[0007] Viewed from a first aspect, there is provided a fluid delivery device for applying fluid to skin or hair. The device comprises a housing configured to receive a capsule containing a fluid, an atomizer configured to selectively atomize the fluid in the capsule, a circuit electrically connected to the atomizer, and a plurality of apertures, wherein the atomized fluid is configured to leave the device through the plurality of apertures.
[0008] The term 'fluid delivery device' is intended to mean a device which is able to expel a fluid. The term 'capsule' is intended to mean a container for holding a fluid. The term 'selectively atomize' is intended to mean that the atomizer is able to be turned on or off. This may be through software, a button, a switch or through activation of a touch screen on the device.
[0009] The body treatment delivery device is able to distribute a thin mist. This is achieved due to the atomizer which is able to atomize the fluid in the capsule into fine particles. This is useful when, for example, the device is being used to apply perfume to a user's hair. By applying a thin mist, it is ensured that not too much perfume is applied to the user's hair which could lead to the hair appearing wet or greasy or being weighed down unnecessarily.
[0010] The capsule may be removable from the device. In this way, when the fluid in the capsule has been used up, it can be removed and replaced. For example, if the capsule is located inside the housing, the housing might be opened and the capsule removed. Alternatively, if the capsule is located at an end of the housing, the capsule may be detached from the housing without opening the housing. Thus, the device is a multi-use device. Furthermore, the device may be used for different purposes. For example, a first capsule containing perfume for applying to hair may be used. An alternative capsule may then be attached to the device containing a fluid for applying to skin. Thus, the single body treatment device can be used for a number of applications.
[0011] The device may additionally comprise a comb portion. The comb portion may comprise a plurality of projections extending from the device wherein each of the plurality of projections may comprise a proximal end and a distal end. The term 'proximal' is intended to mean the part of the projection closest to the device. The term 'distal' is intended to mean the part of the projection furthest from the device. When the device is in use, the projections on the comb portion may therefore be run through the hair of the user as if the user were using a hairbrush. The distal ends of the projections may be able to contact the scalp of the user.
[0012] One or more of the projections may comprise at least one aperture, wherein the atomized fluid may be configured to travel along the projections and out of the at least one aperture. For example, the aperture may be at the distal ends of the projections and/or on the sides of the projections. When the apertures are formed in the ends of the projections, the fluid is able to be provided directly to the scalp of the user. This may be useful when the fluid inside the capsule is a scalp treatment. Additionally, by having the apertures at the ends of the projection, the fluid is able to be distributed throughout the hair rather than just to the outermost layer. Additionally, the apertures on the sides of the projection may provide an even distribution throughout the layers of the hair.
[0013] The one or more projections may be substantially triangular in shape, wherein the one or more apertures may be formed in the edges of the triangular projections. The term 'substantially triangular' is intended to mean a triangular shape with a non-angular apex and non-straight sides. Put another way, the projections may have a curvilinear triangular shape or may be a 'tombstone' shape. In another example, the projections may be triangular, square or rectangular or another shape. Alternatively, the projections may be substantially cylindrical elongate projections.
[0014] The one or more projections may be substantially triangular in shape, wherein the one or more apertures may be formed in the faces of the triangular projections. The term 'substantially triangular' is intended to have the same meaning as discussed above.
[0015] The proximal end of each of the plurality of projections may be attached to a comb base plate, wherein the comb base plate may comprise a plurality of apertures, wherein the atomized fluid may be configured to travel through the plurality of apertures. The apertures may be in between the projections. In this way, the fluid exits from the apertures and travels along the outside of the projections. Additionally or alternatively, the apertures may be at the connection point between the proximal ends of the projections and the base plate. In this way, the fluid passes out of the apertures and travels along the inside of the projections and out through apertures in the projections.
[0016] The comb portion may be removably attached to the device. In this way, the comb portion may be replaced depending on the type of hair it is being used with. For example, more curly hair may require a first type of comb portion whereas straight hair may react better with a second type of comb portion. Alternatively, the comb portion can be replaced if it gets damaged or an aperture gets blocked.
[0017] The comb base plate may be attached to the device by one or more magnets.
Thus, it is easily removable from the device for replacing or cleaning. In another example, the comb portion is removable from the device with the mist transmission tunnel attached to the comb portion. These parts can then be replaced or cleaned. This is beneficial if a different perfume capsule is going to be used to avoid contamination between the two.
[0018] The device may be handheld. Thus, the device can be operated by a single user for applying product to their hair. The device may a have a curved outer shape in order to be more comfortably held by the user.
[0019] The device may additionally comprise one or more light emitting diodes, LEDs, on the housing. The LED may be activated if the device is turned on. Additionally or alternatively, there may be an LED showing a fill level of the capsule.
[0020] The capsule may additionally comprise a chip for identifying the capsule. For example, the chip may indicate the type of fluid inside the capsule. Furthermore, such a chip may prevent non-certified capsules being used with the device.
[0021] The device may additionally comprise a battery. The battery may be rechargeable or may be replaced once it has depleted. In another example, the device may be powered by the mains.
[0022] The device may additionally comprise a mist transmission tunnel inside the housing. The mist transmission tunnel is able to direct atomized fluid or mist from the atomizer to the plurality of apertures.
[0023] The device may additionally comprise at least one fan, wherein the fan may be configured to direct the atomized fluid into the mist transmission tunnel. The fans generate turbulence in the flow of mist and therefore prevent the mist condensing before it leaves the device.
[0024] The device may additionally comprise a cap. The cap may be releasably attached to the device. In this way, the cap can be placed over the end of the device from which the fluid is expelled when the device is not being used. This protects the end of the device from damage or contamination. For example, if residual fluid remains on the outside of the apertures, this may attract dirt or dust. This could block the apertures or lead to the dirt or dust being passed to the users hair when the device is next used. By having the cap to cover the end of the device and these apertures, this contamination is prevented from happening. In another example, the cap may have slots or apertures through which mist from the atomizer may pass.
[0025] The atomizer may be an ultrasonic atomizer. Thus, the fluid particles inside the capsule are able to effectively and quickly be atomized and small droplets be expelled from the device. This enables an even distribution of mist to be applied to a user's hair or skin.
[0026] The atomizer may comprise a piezoelectric element located on a base plate. The piezoelectric element may be in contact with a substrate. The substrate is able to hold the piezoelectric element in place.
[0027] The atomizer may additionally comprise a mesh portion. The mesh portion may be configured to be vibrated by the atomizer, and may be substantially aligned with an opening in the capsule. The term 'mesh' is intended to mean a portion with holes in to allow the passage of the atomized fluid through.
[0028] A transport medium may extend across from opening of the capsule to an opposing end of the capsule from the opening. The transport medium may be formed of a material such as cotton. Put another way, the transport medium may be a stick formed of cotton. This may be known as a humidifier cotton stick. The cotton may be able to absorb the fluid in the capsule and transport it to the opening adjacent the mesh.
[0029] The base plate on which the piezoelectric electric element is located is angled with respect to a plane across the width of the device. This may provide a device which is easier to use by the user as, if it is being used to apply product to the hair, the device may be held at an angle to the head rather than perpendicular to the head [0030] The capsule may be single-use or may be refillable. If the capsule is single use, it may arrive to the user filled with the fluid. The user may then attach it to the device. The device is able to provide a thin mist of product to a user's hair. For example, perfume or a hair product may be applied. The ability to apply the fine mist prevents the hair looking greasy or being unnecessarily weighed down.
[0032] The device may be usable as a massaging device. For example, an alternative head may be added to the device which may be used to massage a user. Power may be provided to the massaging head by the battery and an electrical connection. The device may also be able to apply product to a user whilst providing the massaging effect.
[0033] The device may be usable for applying product to skin. For example, the device could be used to provide moisturiser to the skin of a user. The device may additionally comprise a heater to heat the skin as the product is applied. This heating may be required to increase the effectiveness of some products. Power may be provided to the heater by the battery and an electrical connection.
[0034] Viewed from a second aspect, there is provided a charging station, the charging station attachable to the device of the first aspect to charge the battery.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0045] The present teaching relates generally to a hair misting device. The device may also be used to apply treatment to other parts of the body including the skin. For example, the device may be used to apply product to the skin. Alternatively, the device may be used as a massage device which may apply product to the body whilst moving or vibrating to achieve a massaging effect.
[0046] Figures 1A to 1G show the hair misting device 1 according to a first aspect of the invention. The device is a handheld device. For example, the device may have a length of approximately 150 mm, a width of approximately 50 mm and a height of approximately 45 mm.
[0047] Figure 1A shows an exploded isometric view of the device 1 from one side. Figure 18 shows an exploded isometric view of the device 1 from the other side. Figure 1C shows a cross sectional view of the assembled device. Figure 1D shows the assembled device.
[0048] The device 1 comprises a housing 9. Figure 1A shows the housing 9 split into an first portion 10 and a second portion 11. A circuit 4 such as an electronic circuit is printed onto the inside of the second portion 11 of the housing 9. The electronic circuit 4 is powered by a battery 16 located underneath the circuit 4. The battery 16 is a lithium battery. The battery 16 may be charged by attaching it to a charging station (not shown). In the present example, when assembled, the first and second portions of the housing are attached by screws. In other examples, the housing may be injection moulded in a single piece.
[0049] The housing 9 additionally comprises a housing base plate 5 attached to a first end of the housing 9. Attached to a second end of the housing is a capsule 2 configured to hold a fluid. The fluid may be a perfume. The capsule 2 may be removed from the device and replaced. An ultrasonic atomizer or humidifier 3 is attached to the capsule 2 and is configured to atomize the fluid in the capsule 2. In some examples, the atomizer 3 is ultrasonically welded to the capsule 2. The capsule has an opening 24 (best shown in figure 1C). The atomizer 3 is in contact with the fluid in the capsule 2 through the opening 24. A transport medium (not shown) extends from the opening 24 to the opposing end of the capsule from the opening. The transport medium may be a material stick made of, for example, cotton.
[0050] The transport medium absorbs the fluid and concentrates it onto the area of contact with the atomizer. This will be discussed further later with respect to figure 1D. The circuit 4 is electrically connected to the atomizer 3 by an electrical connector 15. When the device is assembled, the atomizer 3 sits within the housing 9. A magnetic portion may be incorporated into the capsule 2 and housing 9 in order to releasably hold the two together. Alternatively, an interference fit may be formed between the capsule 2 and housing 9.
[0051] The capsule 2 comprises a security chip (not shown). The chips may be required for electronic verification of the capsule. This avoids capsules made by other manufacturers being used with the device. Additionally or alternatively, the chip may store consumption information of the capsule or information about the product in the capsule. The capsule 2, once empty, may either be refilled or disposed of with the atomizer 3 and replaced with a new capsule and atomizer. This may have the same or a different fluid inside. If a different fluid is being used, the device may first be cleaned to avoid contamination of the new fluid with any remaining previous fluid.

Each of the plurality of projections comprises a proximal end attached to the comb base plate 13 and a distal end. As is shown in figure 1C, the apertures 29 in the first iteration are formed in the edges of the projections 8. As can be seen from the right hand view, the projections 8 are substantially hollow and the hollow insides of the projections 8 are in fluid communication with apertures in the comb base plate 13. The atomizer 3 comprises a holding portion 21, a piezoelectric element 22 located on top of a substrate and a mesh 23 located in the middle of the piezoelectric element 22. The substrate may be formed of metal. The piezoelectric element 22 is located on a base portion 25 in a recess formed in the base portion. The holding portion 21 holds the piezoelectric element 22 and mesh 23 in place. When assembled, the holding portion 21 is attached to a base portion 25. The electrical connector 15 connects wires from the piezoelectric element 22 to the rest of the device. The piezoelectric element 22 may be formed in a ring shape.
[0061] The piezoelectric element 22 coverts an electric signal sent from the circuit 4 to the atomizer 3 to a mechanical signal. The frequency of the vibration of the mechanical signal is ultrasonic. For example, the frequency may be 113 KHz. In other examples, the frequency may be between 105 and 160 KHz or may be up to 170 kHz depending on the radius of the piezoelectric element 22. The element ring 22 causes the metal substrate on which it sits to vibrate which subsequently causes the mesh 23 in the centre of the substrate to vibrate.

The apertures have a diameter of approximately 1 micro metre.

A propulsion of liquid mist particles is then provided that looks like fog/smoke which travels down the mist transmission tunnel 18, through the apertures 12 and out of the device.

The fans increase the airflow rate and create a turbulent flow to mix the atomized fluid with the flow of the fans. This increases the distribution of the atomized fluid from the device 1.

The elongate openings may be a variety of lengths as is shown in the figure or may all be the same length. For example, the openings may have a width of approximately 6 mm and a length of between 30 and 50 mm. In other examples, the openings may be circular rather than elongate.

The atomizer functions in the same way as the atomizer of the other aspects of the invention. The electrical connector 15 extends along the side of the atomizer 3. By having the connector on one side as is shown in this figure, it is ensured that the capsule 2 and atomiser 3 are inserted into the housing at the correct orientation.

In order to use the device as a massaging device, the capsule 3 and atomizer 3 may be removed from the device, and an alternative attachment joined to the device. Alternatively, the comb portion alone may be removed from the device and a massager module attached to the device. The massager may simultaneously be able to apply product whilst massaging. The product may be located within the capsule and be atomized by the atomizer. Similarly, if the device is being used for applying treatment to the skin and/or body, the comb portion may be removed and replaced with a treatment application portion.

Claims (27)

  1. CLAIMS: 1 A fluid delivery device for applying fluid to skin or hair, the device comprising: a housing configured to receive a capsule containing a fluid; an atomizer configured to selectively atomize the fluid in the capsule; a circuit electrically connected to the atomizer; and a plurality of apertures, wherein the atomized fluid is configured to leave the device through the plurality of apertures.
  2. 2. The device of claim 1, wherein the capsule is removable from the device.
  3. 3 The device of any of claims 1 or 2, additionally comprising a comb portion, wherein the comb portion comprises a plurality of projections extending from the device wherein each of the plurality of projections comprises a proximal end and a distal end.
  4. 4 The device of claim 3, wherein one or more of the projections comprises at least one aperture, wherein the atomized fluid is configured to travel along the projections and out of the at least one aperture.
  5. The device of claim 4, wherein the one or more projections are substantially triangular in shape, where the one or more apertures are formed in the edges of the triangular projections.
  6. 6 The device of any of claims 4 or 5, wherein the one or more projections are substantially triangular in shape, where the one or more apertures are formed in the faces of the triangular projections.
  7. 7 The device of any of claims 3 to 6, wherein the proximal end of each of the plurality of projections is attached to a comb base plate, wherein the comb base plate comprises a plurality of apertures, wherein the atomized fluid is configured to travel through the plurality of apertures.
  8. 8. The device of any of claims 3 to 7, wherein the comb portion is removably attached to the device.
  9. 9. The device of claim 7, wherein the comb base plate is attached to the device by one or more magnets.
  10. 10. The device of any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the device is handheld.
  11. 11. The device of any of claims 1 to 10, additionally comprising one or more light emitting diodes, LEDs, on the housing.
  12. 12. The device of any of claims 1 to 11, wherein the capsule additionally comprises a chip for identifying the capsule.
  13. 13. The device of any of claims 1 to 12, additionally comprising a battery.
  14. 14. The device of any of claims 1 to 13, additionally comprising a mist transmission tunnel inside the housing.
  15. 15. The device of claim 14, additionally comprising at least one fan, wherein the fan is configured to direct the atomized fluid into the mist transmission tunnel.
  16. 16. The device of any of claims 1 to 15, additionally comprising a cap.
  17. 17. The device of any of claims 1 to 16, wherein the atomizer is an ultrasonic atomizer.
  18. 18. The device of any of claims 1 to 17, wherein the atomizer comprises a piezoelectric element located on a base plate.
  19. 19 The device of claim 18, wherein the atomizer additionally comprises a mesh portion, wherein the mesh portion is configured to be vibrated by the atomizer, wherein the mesh portion is substantially aligned with an opening in the capsule.
  20. 20. The device of claim 19, wherein a transport medium extends from the opening of the capsule to an opposing end of the capsule from the opening.
  21. 21. The device of any of claims 18 to 20, wherein the base plate on which the piezoelectric electric element is located is angled with respect to a plane across the width of the device.
  22. 22. The device of any of claims 1 to 21, wherein the capsule is single-use or wherein the capsule is refillable.
  23. 23 The device of any of claims 1 to 22, wherein the device is usable as a hair-misting device.
  24. 24. The device of any of claims 1 to 23, wherein the device is usable as a massaging device.
  25. 25. The device of any of claims 1 to 24, wherein the device is usable for applying product to skin.
  26. 26. A charging station, the charging station attachable to the device of claim 13 to charge the battery.
  27. 27. A capsule for a fluid delivery device for applying fluid to skin or hair, the capsule attached to an atomizer, the atomizer configured to selectively atomize fluid in the capsule.
