Abstract

A clip for supporting a cable or pipe against a surface formed from a single piece of fire-resistant wire that has a helix 1 which forms an aperture for a fixing nail or screw. The wire or cable retaining element may have a top section 2 and an end section 3 with the cable or pipe being retained within its boundaries in the recess 4. The wire for the clip may be a metal such as stainless steel and may have an anti-corrosive coating.

Description

CLIP
BACKGROUND
Electrical cables and pipes often need to be fixed to a surface such as a wall or a part of a building such as a joist. A commonly used fixing device is a clip comprising a moulded plastic body shaped to retain the cable or pipe against the surface the body being nailed or screwed to the surface.
As of the 1st January 2019 BS7671:2018 -Requirements for Electrical Installations specifies that "wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire".
The clip described above does not meet this requirement because when exposed to the heat of a fire the plastic body may melt leaving the cable unsupported.
Existing fire rated clips suffer from one or more of the following disadvantages: Overly complicated installation involving drilling holes in the surface to which the cable is to be attached, requiring multiple fixings to be driven into the surface or having to be bent into shape during installation; Use more material than necessary for their construction; Only provide very limited resistance to the cable being pulled free; Are easily damaged during installation.
The clip described in this patent application is designed to meet the requirements of BS7671:2018 as well as overcome all the disadvantages of existing clips.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The invention comprises a clip for supporting different sizes of cables and pipes on a surface such as a wall. The clip comprises a single piece of wire bent to form a body (1) and a retaining element.
The wire comprises a fire resistant material. The wire may be metal. The wire may be painted, galvanised, plated or coated by other commonly used methods. The wire may be sleeved for example with plastic. The wire may comprise an elastic material. The wire may comprise a resilient material. The wire may be steel or stainless steel. The melting point of the wire may be greater than 930 degrees centigrade. The wire may have a round cross section. The cross section of the wire may be any other shape. The diameter of the wire may typically be approximately 1 mm to 3 mm. The diameter of the wire may be any diameter.
The body (1) comprises a helix. The diameter of the hole through the helix is dimensioned to receive a fixing such as a nail or a screw. The diameter of the hole through the helix may be dimensioned to be an interference fit with the fixing thus allowing the fixing to be retained in the body prior to use and easily slide within the body (1) to facilitate installation of the clip. The hole through the helix may be approximately 2 mm in diameter. The hole through the helix may be any diameter.
The helix may comprise any number of turns.
Referring to figures 1, 2 and 20. Figure 1 and figure 2 respectively show the top and side view of a first embodiment of the invention. Figure 20 shows a perspective view of the first embodiment of the invention. The retaining element comprises a top section (2) extending from a first end of the body (1) in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the body (1) and a side section (3) extending from the distal end of the top section (2) in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body (1) such that the top section (2) and the side section (3) define with the body (1) a recess (4) to receive a cable or pipe. The side section (3) is straight and substantially the same length as the body (1).
Figure 3 shows a second embodiment of the side section (3). In this embodiment the side section is longer than the body (1) and its free end is formed to a point allowing it to penetrate the surface to which the clip is attached as shown in figure 18. This results in the retained cable or pipe being more securely retained. The side section (3) may typically be 3 mm longer than the body (3). The side section (3) may be any length.
Figure 4 shows a third embodiment of the side section (3). In this embodiment the distal end of the side section (3) is curved or bent away from the body (1). This allows the cable or pipe to be more easily inserted into the recess (4).
Figure 5 shows a fourth embodiment of the side section (3). In this embodiment the side section (3) is curved so as to provide a concave internal side of the recess (4) the side section (3) and the top section (2) substantially lying in the same flat plane. The degree of curve is designed to substantially match the profile of the cable or pipe to be retained. The cable or pipe is thus retained more securely.
In figures 2, 3,4 and 5 the top section (2) is shown as straight. The top section (2) may comprise a curve or arc.
Referring to figures 6 and 24 which respectively show a side view and perspective view of an example of a second embodiment of the invention. In this embodiment the retaining element comprises an arc (5) extending from a first end of the body (1). The arc (5) lies in a plane that is substantially perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the body (1). The arc is designed to substantially match the profile of the cable or pipe to be retained.
S
Referring to figures 7, 8, 9, 22 and 23. Figures 7, 8 and 9 respectively show the top side and bottom views of an example of a third embodiment of the invention. Figures 22 and 23 show perspective views of this example of this embodiment. In this embodiment the retaining element comprises: a top section (2) extending from a first end of the body (1) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the body (1); a side section (3) extending from the distal end of the top section (2) in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body (1); a bottom section (6) extending from the distal end of the side section (3) in a direction substantially parallel to the top section (2) such that the top section (2) the side section (3) and the bottom section (6) define with the body (1) a recess (4) to receive a cable or pipe; a clamp (7) comprising a loop formed at the distal end of the bottom section (6) located adjacent a second end of the body (1) the diameter of the loop being substantially the same as the diameter of the body (1) and the axis of the loop being substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the body (1). In use the clamp (7) and body (1) are flexed apart to allow the cable or pipe to enter the recess (4). The fixing passes through both the body (1) and clamp (7) before being driven into the surface.
Referring to figures 10, 11, 12 and 21. Figures 10, 11 and 12 respectively show end, top and side views of an example of a fourth embodiment of the invention. Figure 21 shows a perspective view of this this example of this embodiment. In this embodiment the retaining element comprises: a first top section (2) extending from a first end of the body (1) in a direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the body (1); a first side section (3) extending from the distal end of first top section (2) in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body (1); an end section (8) comprising an arc of substantially 180 degrees extending from the distal end of first side section (3) the plane of the arc being substantially perpendicular to the plane in which both the first top section (2) and first side section (3) lie; a second side section (9) substantially the same length as the first side section (3) extending from the distal end of the end section (8) in a direction substantially parallel to the first side section (3); a second top section (10) extending from the distal end of the second side section (9) in a direction substantially parallel to the first top section (2) the distal end of the second top section (10) being located adjacent the first end of the body (1).

This embodiment comprises: a first body (12) comprising a first helix; a retaining element (11) comprising an arc extending from a first end of the first body (12) the plane of the arc being substantially perpendicular to the plane of the longitudinal axis of the first body (12); a second body (13) extending from the distal end of the retaining element (11) comprising a second helix the diameter of which is substantially the same as the diameter of the helix of the first body (12) the longitudinal axis of the second body (13) substantially aligning with the longitudinal axis of the first body (12). The combined length of the first body (12) and the second body (13) is substantially the same as the diameter of the retaining element (11). In use the first body (12) and second body (13) are flexed apart to allow the cable or pipe to enter the first recess (14). The fixing passes through both the first body (12) and the second body (13) before being driven into the surface.
Referring to figure 17 showing a side view of the first embodiment of the invention in use. A fixing (15) comprising a nail passes through the body (1) and penetrates a surface (16) such as a wall. Top section (2), side section (3) and body (1) trap the cable (17) against the surface (16).
