Abstract

A self launching powerboat comprises a retractable hydraulically driven tracked undercarriage which can traverse unstable terrain. An undercarriage storage compartment within the hull of the powerboat is enclosed with hydraulically powered doors when the undercarriage is in a stowed position. During land use the bow of the powerboat is supported by a single hydraulically raised non-driven caster balloon tyre.

Description

SELF LAUNCHING POWERBOAT
I have developed a self launching track driven boat which can be used on soft terrain. This enables the boat to visit many otherwise inaccessible beaches and avoids crowded marinas. The concept of amphibious boats is not new, but previous methods have involved wheels and these do not have the ground pressure advantage of tracks so they cannot climb gradients and they sink into sand and shingle.
The track units are raised and lowered hydraulically and when afloat they are housed inside the boat. All hydraulic power is supplied by a separate air-cooled power pack with tandem pumps feeding oil to the drive units.
Steering is achieved by braking each track separately. Doors close hydraulically beneath this housing to retain the hull profile. This compartment does not need to be watertight as the water self drains as the boat gains momentum. I have calculated that using a 1 5OFIP outboard motor, this vessel can achieve a speed of 30 knots or more.
The bow support has a single hydraulically raised non-driven caster balloon tyre which only supports 10% of the total weight. This gives a third gives a third point of support and it stows inside the bow when at sea. All components are marine grade quality and the weight carefully calculated.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig 1 shows door open Fig 2 shows track lowered Fig 3 shows track raised Fig 4 shows door closed Fig 5 shows bow support lowered Fig 6 shows bow support raised Fig 7 shows power pack

Claims (2)

1. Self launching boat comprising a retractable hydraulically driven tracked undercarriage which can traverse unstable terrain.
2. High planning speeds are achieved due to hull profile being maintained when undercarriage is in stowed position.
