Abstract
The indicator comprises an elongate transparent tube with a spherical bulb at one end. A non-toxic liquid partially fills the tube. The tube is initially placed upright with the bulb uppermost and the liquid allowed to freeze. The tube is then inverted as shown and placed in a freezer compartment. If, upon power failure, the compartment defrosts, even for a short period, at least some of the liquid melts and drops into the bulb to indicate the defrost occurrence.
Description
24 1 6842 Freezer Defrost Indicator (FDI) This invention relates to a
simple device that can be placed in a freezer compartment of any food storage device. The device will show if the freezer compartment has defrosted (i.e. power cut) even if the freezer compartment has frozen the contents again thus preventing the possible consumption of spoiled food stuffs stored in the compartment.
The device will indicate if there has been a power cut which has caused the freezer to defrost and then refreeze when the power has been restored whilst left unattended for any period of time i.e. vacation The device consists of a liquid container which is shaped to hold a volume of liquid in either a thin tubular section or a spherical section below. The container will have liquid inside which will freeze and thaw at the appropriate temperatures.
The device will be capable of standing on either end and also be constructed of a clear material suitable for sub zero temperatures Drawing ref FDI- I outline drawing of device in the various stages of operation Figure 1 - Shows the FDI before it is placed in the freezer Figure 2 Shows the FDI inverted and placed into the freezer (indicator fluid still liquid) Figure 3 - Shows the FDI inverted in the freezer (indicator fluid frozen) Figure 4 - Shows the FDI in the operation position (indicator fluid frozen) Figure 5 - Shows the FDI in the operation position as the indicator fluid melts Figure 6 - Shows the FD1 in the operation position if the indicator fluid has refrozen The FDI will be constructed of a clear material and be no longer than lOOmm to allow it to stand up in a freezer drawer / compartment. It would be cylindrical with a larger diameter base than upper section. The indicator fluid would be a non toxic substance which would freeze at sub zero temperatures and that above zero degrees Celsius.
Each end would have a suitable base to allow the device to stand up in the freezer compartment.
Claims (4)
- Freezer Defrost Indicator (FD1) 1. The FDI will indicate if there has been a power cut which has caused the freezer to defrost and then refreeze when the power has been restored whilst left unattended for any period of time i.e. vacation
- 2. The FDI consists of a clear liquid container which is shaped to hold a volume of non toxic liquid in either a thin tubular section or a spherical section below.
- 3. The container will have liquid inside which will freeze and thaw at the appropriate temperatures.
- 4. The FDI will be capable of standing up on either end and also be constructed of a clear material suitable for sub zero temperatures
