Abstract
A thermo-formable and heat-sealable composite sheet material (A) comprises a base layer (1) of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a cushion layer (2) of polyethylene (PE) and a thin film (3) of an ionomer or of an ethylene methyl acrylate co-polymer on said cushion layer, on the opposite face to that face bonded to the base layer, the ionomer or copolymer being chosen so as to be capable of being heat-sealed to an identical ionomer or copolymer layer (4) provided on the exposed surface of a flexible cover sheet (B), and at a temperature at which the PE layer is only softened to provide cushioning of the ionomer or copolymer during heat sealing. The lid may contain a layer (5) of elastomer, a layer (6) of LDPE and a layer (7) of PET or PVDC.
Description
HEAT-SEALABLE COMPOSITE SHEET MATERIALS
AND RECLOSABLE PACKAGES
This invention relates to heat-sealable composite sheet materials and to reclosable packages utilising such sheet materials.
The potential advantages of reclosable packages have been discussed in
Patent Specifications no. US 4673602 and US Re 27361. These specifications both put forward the idea of a flexible composite sheet material which comprises a carrier film, a layer of a pressure-sensitive adhesive and a thin covering layer which can be heat-sealed to a layer of the same heat-sealable material.
In use, when the package is opened, the thin covering layer or the adhesive layer ruptures to expose the pressure sensitive adhesive such that, on reapplication of the composite sheet, a seal is effected by the adhesive.
Various proposals are made in those specifications for suitable materials for the different layers of the composite sheet material.
The present invention is particularly concerned with the problem of devising composite materials which can be thermo-formed to produce a receptacle yet which are suitable for heat sealing to a composite material which incorporates a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.
According to one aspect of the present invention a thermo-formable and heat-sealable composite sheet material comprises a base layer of poly vinyl chloride (PVC) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a cushion layer of polyethylene (PE) and a thin film of an ionomer or of an ethylene methyl acrylate co-polymer on said cushion layer, on the opposite face to that face bonded to the base layer, the ionomer or copolymer being chosen so as to be capable of being heat-sealed to an identical ionomer or copolymer layer provided on the exposed surface of a flexible cover sheet, and at a temperature at which the PE layer is only softened to provide cushioning of the ionomer or copolymer during heat sealing.
When an ionomer is used, the ionomer is preferably SurlynTM sold by
Dupont.
When an ethylene methyl acrylate co-polymer is used, this is preferably Lotryl, which is an EBA and EMA copolymer.
It is to be noted that although polyethylene (PE) is capable of being heatsealed itself to another layer of PE, we choose to provide an ionomer heatsealable film on top of the PE, and we use the PE to act as a cushion to maintain the integrity of the ionomer film during heat sealing. This avoids the use of a thick ionomer film which would be expensive.
We are aware that the use of an ionomer heat-sealable layer has been proposed in specification WO90/07427 as the heat seal layer, but not in conjunction with a material that is itself capable of being heat-sealed.
Preferably the flexible cover sheet for use with a thermo-formed receptacle produced from the sheet material of the first aspect of the invention comprises a base layer of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a layer of pressure sensitive adhesive and a thin film of the ionomer.
One embodiment of the invention is shown diagrammatically, by way of example only, in the accompanying schematic cross-sectional drawing.
In the drawing A represents a portion of a thermo-formed receptacle, such as a bacon tray, and B represents a composite sheet material suitable for being heat-sealed to the peripheral flange 7 of the receptacle. Typical materials and typical material thicknesses are shown in the table:
Layer Material Thickness (Microns) 1 PVC 150-550 2 PE 25-50 3 Surlyn 5-10 4 Surlyn 5-10 5 Elastomer + tackifier 25-50 eg ATO FINDLEY INC M3062 6 LDPE 10-20 7 PET or PVDC 10-60 In the above table layer 6 is an optional coating on the PET layer 7.
Layer 6 may be LLDP (linear low density polyethylene), high density polyethylene (HDPE), medium density polyethylene (MDPE) or could be any suitable generic polyolefin.
The sheet material B can be heat-sealed to the sheet material A by clamping the materials AB between jaws, the upper jaw being heated whereby heat is conducted through layers 7, 6 and 5 to layers 4 and 3, so as to heat seal layer 3 and 4 together.
When the customer opens such a heat-sealed pack the adhesive layer 5 is exposed to provide a cohesive film thereby providing an adhesive interface to give resealability.
