Abstract
A therapeutic composition comprises therapeutic quantities of glucosamine or salts thereof in combination with chondroitin sulphate and one or both of zinc sulphate and ascorbic acid.
Description
A Therapeutic Composition for the Treatment and Repair of
Connective Tissue in Mammals.
The present invention relates to therapeutic compositions for the repair of connective tissue in humans and animals and, in particular, to compositions, which may be considered as food supplements, capable of promoting chondri protection, namely repair and replacement of human and animal connected tissue.
Both glucosamine and compounds thereof and chondroitin sulphate are known as chondri protection agents. They are known to enhance the building blocks of cartilage and at the same time inhibit degradation of these building blocks. Indeed, these substances are themselves used for the production of cartilage.
The useful summary of the current state of knowledge is provided by L R Bucci in Townsend Letters for Doctors - January 1994 pages 52 to 54.
Vetinary products are commercially available which incorporavte one or both of the above named compounds.
A therapeutic composition consisting of gluocosamine, chondroitin sulphate and optionally manganese ascorbate is disclosed in WO94/22453.
According to the present invention, a novel composition for the treatment and repair of connective tissue comprises of glucosamine or salts thereof in combination with chondoritin sulphate and one or both of zinc sulphate and ascorbic acid.
A preferred formulation is given in the following tables.
1. eMil Animal - (Canine/Feline etc).
1 1 Active Ingredient (ngg) Chondroitin Sulphate 400 I Glucosamine HCI 250 N-Acetyl-d-Glucosamine 125 11 D-Glucuronic Acid 125 Ascorbic Acid 50 11 Zn Sulphate 15 11 TOTAL 965.00 2. Equine
1 I Chondroitin Sulphate 200 Gluocosamine HCI 300 N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine 150 l D-Glucuroinic Acid 150 Ascorbic Acid 30 Zn Sulphate 30 Total 860.00 The same animal product will be marketed in capsule form with the active ingredients listed above in an inert filler matrix of any suitable composition to make up the total to 1000. The product will be sold in granule form, again with enough filler to make the total up to 1000, for mixture into food stuffs.
The invention is not, however, limited to the precise quantities shown above. The amounts of the listed ingredients may vary widely from that shown. Moreover, as stated, N-Acetyl-d
Glucosamine and D-Glucuronic acid may be omitted altogether and the glucosamine HCI may be replaced by any other suitable glucosamine salt.
Also, one of the ascorbic acid and zinc sulphate components may be omitted, if appropriate and one should, however, always be present as they serve as catalysts in the metabolic pathways whereby cartilage and related tissues are produced from the chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine building blocks.
Claims (2)
1. A therapeutic composition for the treatment and repair of
connective tissue in mammals comprising therapeutic
quantities of glucosamine or salts thereof in combination
with chondroitin sulphate and one or both of zinc sulphate
and ascorbic acid.
2. A therapeutic composition for the treatment and repair of
connective tissue in mammals substantially as herein before
described.
