Abstract
231,473. Michel, H. March 26, 1924, [Convention date]. Detecting, indicating, and locating faults.-A machine for testing the insulation of enamelled wire which is continuously passed through a mercury bath records on a moving paper band the position of faults in the insulation. The wire 3 to be tested is passed over a pulley 2 dipping into a mercury bath 1 and has one end connected to one pole of a battery P, the other pole of which is connected in series with an electromagnet 10 to the mercury bath 1. On the passage of a fault into the mercury bath, the electromagnet 10 attracts an armature 13 carrying a stylus which makes a mark on a moving band 6. An electromagnet 10<1> in series with the battery P and a contact-maker 11, when energized, attracts a second armature 13<1> carrying a stylus which makes a second series of marks corresponding to equal lengths of wire, the contact-maker 11 being driven through reducing-gearing from the pulley 2. In order to test how the faults increase if the wire is submitted to stress, one or more further mercury baths may be employed, the corresponding styli being displaced by a distance corresponding to the length of wire, between the mercury baths, so that indications referring to the same fault are adjacent. The battery P may be replaced by any source of direct or alternating current.
