Abstract

A video logging system for connection with a video recorder 12 and associated television set 10 comprises a main unit (20, fig. 5) having a memory for storing a list of the programmes recorded on a plurality of video record media. A hand-held remote controller 22 is arranged for the user to enter programme details, in respect of a selected record medium, into the memory of the video logging system. It is also operable to display on the television screen, or on a visual display of the controller, the list of programmes on any selected record medium. Preferably the system is used with video record media with identifying codes (34, fig. 3) adjacent the leading edges of their recording tracks, the codes being read by the playback head of the video recorder and used to identify the particular video record medium against the memory of the logging system. Selection of a programme from the displayed list causes that programme to be found on the tape and played.

Description

VIDEO LOGGING SYSTEM The present invention relates to a system for logging the programs recorded on video cassettes, video discs or other video record media.
It is typically a tedious problem to correctly tabulate video cassettes as to the programs recorded on them. This makes it often difficult to locate a desired program from amongst a number of video cassettes. I have now devised a unit which enables the above-mentioned problem to be substantially alleviated, and which is applicable to video cassettes, video discs or other record media.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a video logging system for connection with a video recorder and associated television set, the system having a memory for storing a list of the programs recorded on a plurality of video record media, and including a hand-held remote controller which is operable to display on the television screen, or on a visual display of the controller, the list of programs of any selected record medium.
The record media may comprise video tape cassettes, video discs, or other data storage devices on which video programs may be recorded and from which they may be replayed.
Preferably the hand-held remote controller is arranged for the user to enter program details, in respect of a selected record medium, into the memory of the video logging system.
Preferably the hand-held remote controller is arranged to emit infra-red signals, which are picked up by a light sensor coupled to the main unit of video logging system, which unit is coupled to the video recorder. Preferably this light sensor is attachable to the front of the video recorder.
Preferably the main unit of the video logging system is arranged for attachment to the rear of the video recorder.
In one embodiment the main unit of the system is arranged to display a menu on the television screen, from which an item may be selected by moving a cursor on the screen, by means of a movable tracker on the hand-held remote controller, and then depressing a push-button of the controller. efebbly the above-mentioned menu includes a simulated alphanumeric keyboard, enabling the hand-held remote controller to be used to write the title of a program into the memory of the video logging system, by selecting individual characters in sequence.
In a modified arrangement, the hand-held controller may include a visual display on which the list of programs is displayed and a keyboard to be used for writing program titles into the memory.
Preferably the video logging system is used with video record media which are provided with an identifying code adjacent the leading end of its recording track, the identifying code being read by the playback head of the video recorder and used by the video logging system to identify that particular video record medium against its memory.
Also in accordance with this invention, there is provided a video logging system for use with a video recorder and associated television set, the system having a memory for storing a list of the programmes recorded on a plurality of video record media, means for entering program details into said memory, and a visual display for displaying the list of programs of any selected video record medium.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is a view of a television and a video cassette recorder which are provided with a video logging system in accordance with the invention; FIGURE 2 is a diagrammatic side view of the equipment shown in Figure 1; FIGURE 3 is a view of a video cassette for use with the video logging system of the invention; FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of the video cassette recorder of Figure 1 from the front; FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the video cassette recorder from the rear and showing the main unit of the video logging system in more detail; and FIGURE 6 is a schematic diagram of the television display when the video logging system it used for listing programs recorded on the tape cassette.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a television set 10 and video cassette recorder 12, the recorder 12 being fitted with a unit 20 of a video logging system in accordance with the present invention: this unit 20 is controlled by a remote, hand-held controller 22. Figures 2, 4 and 5 show the unit 20 secured to the rear of the recorder 12 and connected to the aerial 14, television 10 and recorder 12 via coaxial cables A, B and C. A light sensor 24 is attached to the front of the recorder 12 and is connected to the unit 20 by a cable D. Figure 3 shows a video cassette 30 for use with the video logging system in accordance with this invention: the tape 32 is provided with a code, diagrammatically indicated at 34, adjacent its lead or "head" end.
As shown in Figure 1, the unit 20 of the video logging system is arranged to display a main "menu" on the television screen, consisting of a number of separate boxes or windows for selecting required operations of the video recorder, e.g. play, pause, stop, fast forward, fast reverse, record. The displayed "menu" also includes an additional box or window "Video Log", the function of which will be described in more detail below.
The screen also displays a pointer or cursor P, which is moved to any desired position on the screen by turning a tracker ball 25 of the hand-held controller 22: it will be appreciated that the controller 22 emits infra red signals which are picked up by the sensor 24 and decoded and acted upon by the unit 20.
When the cursor P has been moved to a desired one of the various displayed boxes or windows, one of the push-buttons 26 of the hand-held controller 22 is depressed, so selecting the corresponding operation or function of the video cassette recorder 12. The main menu shown in Figure 1 can be removed from the screen, or brought back to the screen, by depressing the second of the push-buttons 26 of the hand-held controller 22.
If the "Video Log" box or window of the main menu is selected, then this causes the unit 20 to display a subsidiary menu as shown in Figure 6 on the television screen. By playing the cassette currently inserted in the recorder for a short amount from its start, the playback head of the recorder reads the code 34 at the head of the tape: the unit 20 then reads, from its memory store, details which it holds concerning the programs already recorded on the cassette, and lists these on the television screen at 40. This list gives the playing time of each program on the tape, and also indicates the amount of "free" or unrecorded tape remaining. By moving the cursor P to select a desired program from those listed, then selecting this program by depressing the appropriate push-button 26 of the hand-held controller 22, then selecting "play", the unit 20 causes the tape to fast-forward to the selected program and then to play that program.
If it is desired to record a program onto a blank tape (or record an additional program onto a part-full tape), the cursor is used in association with an alphanumeric (e.g.
QWERTY) keyboard 42 which is also displayed in order to type into memory the name of the program to be recorded. The unit 20 uses the timer of the recorder 12 to measure the length of the program which is recorded in this way, and enter this into the memory of the unit 20.
In a modified arrangement, the hand-held controller may include a visual display and keyboard for entering data, and two-way communication (e.g. using infra red signals) is established between the hand-held controller and the unit 20.
In this case, the program information to be written into the memory is entered via the keyboard of the hand-held controller, the keyboard is also used to control the video cassette recorder: further, the display of the controller displays the list of programs stored in the memory. Further in this arrangement, the memory may be located in the hand-held controller instead of in the unit 20 which is fitted to the recorder 12. In a yet further modification, the video logging system consists of the hand-held device only, arranged to store a list of programs recorded on a plurality of video cassettes and to display the list of any selected one of these cassettes, but in this case the device does not have the facility to identify the particular cassette being used in the recorder: the device may however still have a one-way communication facility, for use in controlling the video recorder.
Whilst the above description has referred to the use of video tape cassettes and a video recorder for use with such cassettes, the principles of the invention are equally applicable to video discs or other video recording media, and their corresponding recording/playback machines.

Claims (10)

1) A video logging system for connection with a video recorder and associated television set, the system having a memory for storing a list of the programs recorded on a plurality of video record media, and including a hand-held remote controller which is operable to display on the television screen, or on a visual display of the controller, the list of programs of any selected record medium.
2) A system as claimed in claim 1, in which the hand-held remote controller is arranged for the user to enter program details, in respect of a selected record medium, into said memory of the system.
3) A system as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the handheld controller is arranged to emit infra-red signals for picking up by a light sensor coupled to the main unit of the system.
4) A system as claimed in claim 3, in which said light sensor is attached or attachable to the video recorder.
5) A system as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the main unit of the system is attached or attachable to the rear of the video recorder.
6) A system as claimed in any preceding claim, arranged to display a menu on the television screen, from which an item may be selected using a movable tracker on the hand-held controller.
7) A system as claimed in claim 6, in which said menu includes a simulated alphanumeric keyboard.
8) A system as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5, in which the hand-held controller includes a visual display on which the list of programs is displayed, and a keyboard.
9) A video logging system for use with a video recorder and associated television set, the system having a memory for storing a list of programs recorded on a plurality of video record media, means for entering program details into said memory, and a visual display for displaying the list of programs of any selected video record medium.
10) A video logging system substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
