Abstract

An inflatable travel seat for a child can be deflated for storage in its own carrying case (F, fig 4) when not in use. The seat comprises separate seat cushion B and backrest A with means C to connect the two parts if required. The backrest A may be angled to provide a comfortable recline position and may have additional head support to guide the vehicle's safety belt away from the child's head. The seat cushion B can be used as a booster seat independently of the backrest. The seat is manufactured from fabric coated plastic or rubber with a valve system D for inflation and deflation. The booster seat B may have a textured base to maintain its position on the vehicle seat.

RECLINING TRAVEL SEAT
When travelling long distances with young children it can he difficult for them to sleep in comfort in the hack of a car.
Car seats that are available at present are very bulky and lake up a lot of space both in the car and when in storage. They usually only offer a recline position for children up to the age ot'four years.
Most school aged children don't think it is cool to be seen in a car seat. Many prefer booster seats which enable them to look out of the window and may in turn help combat car sickness, but booster seats are uncomt'ortable to sleep on.
I recently drove through France with three children aged five, six, and nine on a camping trip. I decided to leave our car seats at home as space in the car was very limited. (Three car seats will not fit in the rear seating of most cars anyway, and two seats in place would make it uncomfortable for the third child.) The long drive made us all miserable! It would have been a lot less stressful if the children had been able to sleep for the majority of the trip in a comfortable and safe position.
Hence my idea: to create an inllatahlc, reclining car seat for children between the ages of four and fen, that can be deflated and rolled up for storage when not in use. It comes in two sections, which gives it the versatility to be used both as a booster seat when the child is awake and a recliner when asleep. The back and the base sections can be easily secured to one another. The valve would be for use with a foot pump or by mouth. The two components could be made from fabric coated plastic or rubber; supple, comfortable and easy to clean.
As this seat requires less space than rigid car seats, it could be placed three in a row across the rear passenger seating of most cars - great for larger families! It would use a car's existing rear safety belts. The design of the top section offers good head support and directs the slant of the safety belt away from the child's face and neck.
This idea may also have applications on long flights and train trips.
( 2 Figure 1 shows the travel seat's two components: 'A' and 'B' A - The Back Rest Features include: Recline position for comfortable and safe sleeping.
Head support which also guides the safety belt away from the face and neck.
C - Coupling device to attach the booster to 'B'.
- Valve for use with a toot pump or by mouth.
B - The Booster Seat Features include: A textured. nonslip base to help keep the seat in position.
Can be used independently from the back rest as in figure 2.
Figure 2 shows the booster seat 'B' used independently in a rear car seat.
Enabling the child to look out of the window which could combat car sickness.
Uses the cars existing rear safety belts 'E'.
Figure 3 shows the two pieces attached together and in use in a rear car seat.
Overallfeatures include; Narrow, space saving design.
Supple materials for comfort, safety and easy cleaning.
May be deflated and stored when not in use (see figure 4).
Could he made in fun and jazzy fabrics which appeal to children.
Figure 4 shows the two pieces of the seat 'A' end 'B'deflated and ready to he packed into their storage bag 'F'.
illustrating the most important feature of the scat which is it's space saving benefit when not in use in comparison to rigid children's travel seats presently available.
