Abstract

A Phamacopoeia 1 is a portable device, that includes drug dispensing, reminding and monitoring support, which is connected to a mobile station MS2 and an audio device AD3. The Pharmacopoeia can read ASCII strings received at the MS2 and if a command string then dispense a defined drug, deliver the prescription or if a message string allow the user to listen, via an AD3 to the ASCII reminder message being read. The Pharmacopoeia therefore supports the remote modification of drug dosage, the proscription and when the drugs are delivered. The Pharmacopoeia may include a mobile station 2 an audio device 3 a microcontroller 12 and wireless interface connections 4, 6. It may also include a data storage medium 10 and an on-the-fly language translation module 11.

Description

I 238859 1
The Pharmacopoeia This invention relates to a portable device (i.e. that may be put anywhere convenient) that includes drug dispensing, reminding and monitoring support, which can be connected to a mobile station (MS) and an audio device (AD).
I'o dispense drugs automatically, at preset times is well known, but suffer from the disadvantage that the drug dosage (amount of a single drug) and prescription (collection of drugs) are predetermined in advance. In some circumstances, for example for home care and outpatient care, the drug dosage ad/or prescription may need to be modified due to new circumstances (e.g. for pain control).
The objective of this invention is to allow the drug dosage and prescription to be remotely (external to the Pharmacopoeia) modified and for the dispensing to be monitored.
Accordingly, this invention uses a drug dispensing mechanism that can be controlled remotely and a drug delivery mechanism that can be controlled remotely via ASCII messages that have been received at a mobile station (MS).
Preferably the Pharmacopoeia is made ot' Lightweight metal and/or plastics material and is as small as desirable in size to be used as a portable device.
A pret'erred embodiment ofthe invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure I shows how the Pharmacopoeia will he connected to the MS and AD.
Figure 2 shows a modular diagram of the Pharmacopoeia components.
As depicted in l igure 1' the Pharmacopoeia can be connected to a Mobile Station (MS) and an Audio Device (Al)). 'I'he Pharmacopoeia ( I) comprises ot at least two IIO Interfaces 4 and 6. Data Interface 4 is used to transfer data to and t'rom data interface 5 of the MS (2). Audio Intert'acc 6 is used to transfer data to an AD (3) via its input interface 7. The physical connections between 4 & 5 and 6 & 7 respectively may be either cable or wireless.
As shown in Figure 2, the Pharmacopoeia consists, but is not restricted to, a number of interconnected modules. Each of these modules (4,6,8,9,10, 1 1 and 12) may be either hardware (e.g. a chipset) or software (e.g. a program) or a combination of both. These modules may also be combined in any combination, for example modules 10 and 12 may be combined into a single chipset. The Data Interface (4) has at least 3 uses; firstly to connect the Pharmacopoeia to at least one MS, secondly, to convert any data received into a format that can be used by the Pharmacopoeia and thirdly. to convert any data to be sent to the MS into a format that can be used by the MS.
The Drug dispensing mechanism (DISP) module (8) and the drug delivery mechanism (DEL) module (9) collectively take as input an ASCII string and produce the corresponding actions of either dispensing a defined drug or delivering the dispensed drugs to the user.
/ The Audio Interface (6) has 3 uses; firstly to connect the Pharrnacopocia to at least one AD, secondly, to convert any data to be sent to the AD into a format that can be used by the AD and thirdly to adjust any customizable audio parameters which includes volume, tone, pitch, speed and articulation. To facilitate flexibility the Pharmacopoeia may also include a storage medium (10), a language translation module ( I I) to multi-lingual speech and translation and a microcontroller ( 12).
Designed originally for outpatient care, but equally applicable in any remote care environment, an example of the "Pharmacopoeia" is one that is located in the patients home and uses mobile communication technologies (for example SMS) to accept command messages (via the MS) from a healthcare provider that could be located in their office. The command messages control the drug dosage and prescription, the delivery time, a reminder message that the drugs need to be taken (via the AD) and a monitoring command to check that the drugs have been removed from the Pharmacopoeia. Thor example, a command can be issued from the healthcare providers office to the patients Pharmacopoeia (via the MS) that at 9. 00am the drugs A, B and D need to be delivered to the patient. The quantity of A is I unit, B is units and D is I unit. In time for 9.00am the prescription will be prepared by the drug dispensing mechanism and passed to the drug delivery mechanism tor delivery. An audio reminder message "your drugs need to be taken at 9.00am" is issued at 8.55 am (via the At)). At 9.OOam the patient can then request for the drugs to be delivered by the drug delivery mechanism. This action is monitored and later checked by the healthcare provider to ensure drug compliance.
