Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
A DISPLAY SYSTEM The invention relates to a display system, particularly an electronic display system.
Data can be delivered to a desired location, but is usually not displayed thereat, nor is it activated from the location.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided an electronic display system, comprising a data carrier element, a data receiver means, and a display means for the data, the data carrier element being a discrete element and being activated by the data receiving means, whereby the data is displayed at the display means.
Using the invention it is possible to provide a game or educational device with an animated display, which can be varied.
The data carrier element and data receiving means may be removably interengageable. This provides for the variation.
The data receiving means may comprise a seat in which the data carrier element is removably mountable. This provides for positive interaction.
The data receiving means may be illiminatable when the data carrier element is inserted in the seat. This provides added user interest and involvement. The data receiver means may comprise an actuator means for actuating the data
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
carrier element to transmit data to the data receiving means.
The actuator means may comprise a radio frequency antenna. This is a preferred option, the range being in the range of 134 KHz. The data receiver means may comprise a data reader and a computer means for processing the data and displaying same on the display means. This is a relatively simple construction.
The data carrier element may comprise a moulded plastic body with a radio frequency data carrying transponder embedded therein. This provides a readily manipulable element.
There may be a plurality of separate data carrying elements. This provides for a variety of displayed data.
The body of the or each data carrying element may have a transparent portion. This provides for aesthetic interest, particularly when there may be a set of twenty four separate data carrying elements.
Each set may comprise four sub-sets. The provision of sets provides for collecting or swapping of elements of a set or sub-set.
Each member of a sub-set may have embedded in the transparent portion a discrete one of six separate shapes. This again provides for added user interest, and enhances swapping and/or collecting.
Each sub-set may have a particular identifier, preferably colour.
The transponder of the or each data carrier element may comprise a
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
read/write device whereby it is re-programmable. This provides for flexibility of the system.
The data may comprise game data.
The computer means may comprise a running director programmed to allow control of the displayed data.
The director may comprise software which may determine the data displayed depending on the data carrier element being currently utilised.
The apparatus of the present invention may be used in combination with the pen and apparatus for behavioral observation of the applicant's co-pending applications, respectively Numbers 011284014 and 0112841.2 and the disclosure of those applications is included by reference.
An electronic display system embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a schematic layout of a game or educational display system according to the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a data carrier element and part of a data receiver means of the system of Fig. 1 ; Fig. 3 shows a plan view of six separate data carrier elements of the system, and a side view of one of the elements, the external configurations of which are identical ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 4 shows three of the elements of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 shows a plan view of part of the data receiver means; and Figs. 6 to 8 show schematically data which can be displayed.
Referring to the drawings there is shown an electronic display system 1 in the form of a game or educational system, comprising a data carrier element 2, a data receiving means 3 and a display means 4 in the form of an LCD screen for the data, the data carrier element 2 being a discrete hand held element and being activated by the data receiving means 3 whereby the data is displayed at the display means 4 on the LCD screen.
The data carrier element 2 is one of a set, in the embodiment twenty four, there being four sub-sets 5 (Fig. 3) of six. Each sub-set 5 has an identifier such as colour 6, thus there may be six red elements, six blue, six yellow and six green. Each element 2 is a capsule-like object which is moulded in plastic to provide a body 7 with a clear or transparent portion or part 8 and the coloured identifier part 6. Each element 7 has a recess 9, and each one has one of six shapes 10 embedded in the clear part 8 so as to be readily visible and identifiable. Importantly, each also has embedded in it a read/write audio frequency transponder 11 which is programmable with desired data, in the embodiment animatable when displayed, like the body 12 shown in Fig. 6, islands 13 of Fig. 7 or a compass 14, Fig. 8.
The data receiver means 3 comprises a dome-shaped seat or holder 15 which has a recess 16 in which an element 2 is removably received or interengaged with a close fit, there being a spigot 17 for locating in the recess 9 in the element (s) for positive engagement.
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
The seat 15 is mounted in a table or console 18 and is made of clear or translucent plastic, there being means to illuminate it from below in the form of a ring of lights 19 such as neons. The table 18 includes a radio frequency antenna 20 which is part of a reader, which in turn is connected to computer means 21 comprising a running director, there being a basic stamp circuit 22 which allows the data from the antenna and reader 20 to be processed in the director 21. The processed data is then transmitted by the director 21 to the LCD screen 4 where the data is viewed.
It will be understood that there are suitable connectors 23 which may be wires or contact-less. The system 1 is suitably a game system which is played by children, though any age group can utilise the system. The transponders 11 of each element 2 are pre-programmed with data such as that shown in Figs. 6 to 8.
A player selects one of twenty four elements 2 of the set and inserts it in the seat 16 so that the spigot 17 engages in the recess 9.
The seat 15 lights up, via the lights 19, the antenna 21 sends a radio frequency signal at about 134 KHz to the element 2 and the transponder 11 embedded therein is activated and broadcasts its stored (and reprogrammable) data back to the reader, which is associated with the antenna 20.
The system 1 thus acts basically as two separate antennae, one on the transponder 11 in the element 2, one on the data receiving means 3 at the antenna 20. The reader transmits the data broadcast to it via the basic stamp circuit 22 to the running director 21, a PC which then transmits that data for display on the LCD screen 4.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Typically, each display will have characteristic music associated with it, and the animation lasts for a pre-determined time period, say about 30 seconds.
The director is programmed with software such that when one element 2 is removed from the seat 15 and replaced by another, the animation is controlled.
The user thus can change the animated display as often and as variably as he/she desires simply by using different ones of the elements 2 of a set.
Thus, in the Fig. 6 example, a beak 24 may open and close using data from one element, while in another bees 25 may be seen leaving the beak 24, and in another, being swallowed.
In Fig. 7, islands 13 are depicted, which can be seen to rise out of the ocean floor, while in Fig. 8 a compass needle 26 can be seen to turn.
The set of elements 2 may contain data pertaining to four characters like that 12 of Fig. 6, each character having its own characteristic music, or signature tune. As there are sets and sub-sets, a user may collect a complete set by starting off with just one or two, or can swap elements as desired.
In the foregoing description of the embodiments shown in the drawings, the element or set of elements 2 contains data which when engaged with a data receiver means 3 activates a display. In a modification of those embodiments, a data carrier element (or tag) which is programmed to carry a relatively small amount of data, which when engaged with, as by being inserted in the, the data receiving means activates a system, of which the data carrier and data receiver means are part, with full power, the data of the system separate from
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
that of the data carrier being more powerful than that data carrier power so as to provide a full element display for the system.
Stated in another way, the data carrier acts as a catalyst or"seed"to release and utilise the full power of the system.
