Abstract
A transponder key 16 for a security system, e.g. vehicle door lock and ignition system, comprises a rechargeable internal battery 16d and means 16a, 16b for inhibiting the transmission of signals from the key in response to detection of a charging voltage for recharging the internal battery of the transponder. A storage station 20 comprising a battery charger 22 suitable for recharging the internal battery 16d of the transponder key 16 is also disclosed. Preferably the charging voltage is applied to the key 16 by means of electrical contacts, or is induced electromagnetically in a coil provided within the key. The key 16 may include means for rectifying the induced voltage to generate the charging voltage for the internal battery. Preferably the storage station includes a radio shield surrounding the key to prevent it from receiving or transmitting signals whilst in storage.
Description
VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM
The present invention relates to a transponder key that incorporates a rechargeable battery for use in a vehicle security system having passive entry and mobilisation.
Vehicle security systems are known in which the driver is merely required to carry an electronic key. When the driver operates the door handle to gain access to the vehicle, a transmitter in the vehicle sends an interrogation signal to the electronic transponder key. The key then responds with an access code and when the correct code in received and recognised by the vehicle, all the vehicle systems are enabled to allow the driver to enter the vehicle and start the engine.
The advantage of such a system is that the driver is merely required to carry the key on his person and there is no need to do anything with it such as inserting it into a slot or pocket. This makes for great ease of use and convenience.
A problem with security systems having a passive entry and mobilisation transponder key is that the key can be made to transmit its access code when it is not in the vicinity of the vehicle. A would be thief can operate the vehicle door handle while the driver is in his residence and use a radio link to pick up the vehicle interrogation signal and relay it to a transmitter unit which is placed near the front door of the residence. It is quite likely that the driver will have left the passive transponder key near the front door and if it should respond to the relayed interrogation signal, then its transmission can be picked up, stored for duplication or relayed to the vehicle to allow immediate unauthorised access.
With a view to mitigating the foregoing disadvantage, the present invention provides a transponder key for a security system, which key incorporates a rechargeable internal battery, wherein the key includes means for inhibiting the transmission of signals from the key in response to detection of a charging voltage for recharging the internal battery of the transponder.
In accordance with a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a transponder key for a security system which key incorporates a rechargeable internal battery in combination with a storage station that incorporates a battery charger, wherein the key includes means for inhibiting the transmission of signals from the key in response to detection of a charging voltage.
The internal battery may either be recharged using contacts on the key or by inducing a voltage electromagnetically in a coil that is built into the key.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a block diagram of a security system using a passive entry and mobilisation key, and
Figure 2 shows a charging station for a contact-less key.
In the security system of Figure 1, when a handle 10 is operated it transmits a signal to a micro-processor 12. This then sends a signals which is transmitted by a transmitter circuit 14 to a passive key 16, which is itself a transponder. The key 16, when interrogated by the vehicle, sends an access code to a vehicle receiver circuit 18 which passes the received signal to the micro-processor 12. If the correct access code is received, the micro-processor 12 enables the various vehicle systems 20, which include such
items as the door locks and the ignition system to allow the vehicle to be entered and driven away.
As earlier mentioned, if by nefarious means a would be thief arranges for an interrogation signal to be transmitted to the key 16 when it is not in use, the key will be tricked into transmitting its access code, which can then the detected and stored. The invention therefore is concerned with preventing operation of the key when it is in storage.
To this end, it is proposed to store the key when it is not in used in a storage station that includes a charger for the internal battery of the key. While the key 16 detects the presence of a charging voltage its internal transmitter is disabled so that it cannot respond to any interrogation signal. If desired, the internal radio receiver of the key may be disabled instead of, or in addition to, the disablement of the internal transmitter, as the inability to detect an interrogation signal would in itself act to prevent the transmission of an access code.
Figure 2 shows a transponder key 16 arranged within a storage station 20. The storage station 20 comprises a slot into which the key can be inserted. It is preferred to make the casing of the storage station of an electrically conductive material as this will act to shield the key and thereby prevent the transmission and reception of radio signals even if the battery charger is not switched on.
The key 16 has a rechargeable battery 16d without any external contacts. Instead, the key 16 incorporates a charging circuit 16a in addition to its internal microprocessor 16b and its transceiver circuit 16c.
The storage station 20 is surrounded by a coil 22 which induces an a. c. voltage in a coil of the charging circuit 16a. This inductively coupled charging voltage is rectified
and regulated by the charging circuit 16a and used to charge the battery 16d which powers the micro-processor 16b and the transceiver circuit 16c. It is alternatively possible to provide the storage station and the key with electrical contacts in lieu of the inductive coupling, in which case the charging voltage can be d. c. and need not be rectified by the key.
In the presence of a charging field (or a charging voltage if the key and the storage station have electrical contacts) the charging circuit 16a supplies an input to the micro-processor 16b to disable transmission of an access code. This can be done by disabling the transmitter/ receiver 16c, the microprocessor 16b or both while the key is in storage and the battery 16d is being recharged.
Claims (6)
1. A transponder key for a security system, which key incorporates a rechargeable internal battery, wherein the key includes means for inhibiting the transmission of signals from the key in response to detection of a charging voltage for recharging the internal battery of the transponder.
2. In combination, a transponder key for a security system, which key incorporates a rechargeable internal battery, and a storage station that incorporates a battery charger, wherein the key includes means for inhibiting the transmission of signals from the key in response to detection of a charging voltage.
3. A combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein the charging voltage is applied to the key by means of electrical contacts.
4. A combination as claimed in claim 2, wherein a voltage is induced by the storage station electromagnetically in a coil that is built into the key, the key additionally comprising means for rectifying the induced voltage to generate a charging voltage for the internal battery.
5. A combination as claimed in any of claims 2 to 4, wherein the storage station includes a radio shield surrounding the key to prevent it from receiving or transmitting radio signals while in the storage station even when no charging voltage is present.
6. A combination as claimed in any of claims 2 to 5, wherein the means for inhibiting the transmission of signals by the key includes means for disabling any one or more of a transmitter, a receiver and a microprocessor that form part of the key.
