Abstract

A carton for bottles has an internal divider unit formed by two divider panels (7,8) glued together face to face and extending between one pair of opposite side walls of the carton body, and divider flaps (10,11) released from the divider panels and extending at right angles thereto in opposite directions and glued to the other pair of opposite side walls. The panels (7,8) may have hand holes for carrying the carton. Four or six compartments may be defined.

<Desc/Clms Page number 1> "CARTONS" This invention relates to cartons made of cardboard, paperboard or similar lightweight foldable sheet material, and in particular to such cartons formed with internal dividers which define separate compartments for receiving bottles and like articles.
According to the present invention there is provided a carton formed with integral internal dividers defining compartments for receiving bottles or the like, having a divider unit comprising two hingedly connected divider panels folded together face to face and extending across the carton interior, one of said divider panels being hingedly connected to a side wall of the carton, and at least one divider flap released from each of said divider panels and extending transversely away therefrom.
Such an arrangement makes for a particularly convenient way of providing an array of mutually transverse internal dividers in a carton, by forming them from a single divider unit. The carton could incorporate more than one divider unit, but one such unit is sufficient to form at least six compartments, as will be understood from the ensuing description.
Preferably the distal end of each of said divider flaps, and the distal end of the said divider unit, are secured to appropriate side walls of the carton. A four sided carton may have a said divider unit extending between one pair of opposite side walls thereof, with the said divider flaps secured to the other pair of walls. If such a carton has four compartments, one of said divider flaps will be released from each divider panel of the divider unit. In a six compartment carton two divider flaps will be released from each divider panel.

with a hand hole for carrying the carton.
Two embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a cardboard blank for making a carton with four compartments; Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views of part of the blank of Figure 1, at successive stages in its erection to form a carton; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the erected carton, partly broken away to show the interior; Figure 5 is a perspective view of the carton in use, carrying four bottles; and Figures 6 to 10 are similar views of a blank and a carton with six compartments.
Referring first to Figure 1, a blank for making a square, open topped, carton for carrying four bottles-or the like comprises a row of five side wall forming panels 1 to 5 and an array of base forming panels 6.
The side wall panel 5, which overlaps and is glued to the inside of the side wall panel 1 in the erected carton (see below) carries panels for forming a divider unit, of which divider panel 7 is hinged to the wall panel 5 and divider panel 8 is released from the wall panel while being hinged to panel 7 along hinge line 9. Divider flaps 10 and 11 are released from the divider panels 7 and 8 respectively, except where they are hinged to the said panels at 12 and 13.
Referring now to Figures 2 to 4, during erection of the carton the side wall panel 5 is folded at right angles to the side wall panel 4 and is glued to the inside face of the side wall panel 1 (not shown in Figures 2 and 3 for clarity) to form the tubular body of the carton. Then, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, the divider panel 8 is folded up and glued face to face to the divider panel 7. At the same time the divider flaps 10 and 11 are separated from the panels 7 and 8 and

positioned at right angles thereto, and gluing tabs 14 and 15 on the divider flaps are glued to side walls 2 and 4 respectively. A gluing tab 16 on the divider panel 8 is glued to the side wall 3. A hand hole 17 is formed in the divider panels 7 and 8 in a conventional manner. Figure 5 shows the erected carton in use, carrying four bottles 18.
Referring now to Figures 6 to 10, this embodiment is similar in many ways to that of Figures 1 to 5 but is arranged to carry six bottles rather than four. Parts having the same functions as those in the first embodiment are given the same reference numerals and will not be described again. In this embodiment, each of the divider panels 7 and 8 has two divider flaps 19 to 22 released therefrom, for displacement about hinge lines 23 to 26. In the erected carton, gluing tabs 27 and 28 on flaps 19 and 20 are glued to side wall 2 and gluing tabs 29 and 30 on flaps 21 and 22 are glued to side wall 4.

Claims (9)

  1. claims: 1. A carton formed with integral internal dividers defining compartments for receiving bottles or the like, having a divider unit comprising two hingedly connected divider panels folded together face to face and extending across the carton interior, one of said divider panels being hingedly connected to a side wall of the carton, and at least one divider flap released from each of said divider panels and extending transversely away therefrom.
  2. 2. A carton as claimed in claim 1, wherein the distal end of each of said divider flaps is secured to a side wall of the carton.
  3. 3. A carton as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the distal end of the said divider unit is secured to a side wall of the carton.
  4. 4. A carton as claimed in claim 2 or 3, which is four sided, the said divider unit extending between one pair of opposite side walls thereof and the said divider flaps being secured to the other pair of side walls.
  5. 5. A carton as claimed in claim 4, which has four compartments, one said divider flap being released from each divider panel of said divider unit.
  6. 6. A carton as claimed in claim 4, which has six compartments, two said divider flaps being released from each divider panel of said divider unit.
  7. 7. A carton as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the said divider unit is formed with a hand hole for carrying the carton.
