Abstract

A seat 1, such as a passenger aeroplane seat, comprises pivotally interconnected seat back 2 and seat members 4 movable together in a single action in which seat 1 as a whole opens out, (in transition from fig.2 to fig.1) as the seat back 2 tilts backwards and moves downwards, and the seat member 4 moves forwards. This action might also be described as a rocking facility in which the seat member 4 and seat back 2 in combination may be said to rotate around a common virtual axis 14. The seat may be provided with arcuate guides 10, 12 and corresponding extensions 6, 8 to enable such an action. The seat member 4 may tilt independently (fig.6) to a position adjacent the seat back 2 to aid the passage of a user past the seat 1. The seat may be of low loft / thickness, for example, using of a webbing material (41, fig.7). The seat 1 may further feature a nesting arm rest arrangement (figs. 3 and 4) and at least one inflatable section (50, 52, 56, fig. 8) in the seat member 4 to aid user comfort.

Description

2361865 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO AEROPLANE SEATS 5 This invention
concerns improvements in or relating to aeroplane seats.
In particular, but not exclusively, the invention has reference to such seats as are deployed in the economy class areas of conventional passenger-carrying aircraft.
A known attribute of current aircraft seating is inherent and acute discomfort which is characterised by the pitch of the seating, the usually well-worn upholstery, the disposition of the armrests and the difficulty of moving from a trapped non-aisle seat, e.g. a window seat, to the aisle and back. Furthermore, the seat geometry can only be changed by movement of the seatback with little accompanying improvement in the position and posture of the passenger.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved aeroplane seat which at least addresses the problems outlined above and provides for an enhanced level of passenger comfort.
According to one aspect of the invention an aeroplane seat is provided with a rocking facility whereby the position of the seat from the upright position is changed by pivoting the whole of the seat about a virtual axis, the seat support portion and the seatback remaining' in a prescribed relationship one to the other.
2 The seat is provided with appropriate extensions which may be in the form of lugs and which are adapted to locate in or on arcuate guides at either side of the seat for the seatback and the scat support portion.
The prescribed relationship between the seatback and the seat support portion may be variable and may be varied by the passenger according to requirements.
According to a second aspect, the invention provides an armrest for an aeroplane seat, the armrest being in two parts, one part being pivoted to the seatback and lockable in an open operative position, the two parts being pivoted one to the other whereby in the open operative position the parts are locked to provide support, and in the closed parked position the 15 two parts pivot to fold closed one mating with the other.
A recessed region between the seats at the level of the armrests is provided whereby the armrests are not intrusive into the seat back area.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided an aeroplane seat in accordance with the first aspect of the invention wherein the seat support portion is itseltpivoted whereby it may be elevated into a position adjacent the seatback when required to increase clearance space.
This third aspect of the invention essentially confers upon the seat a 'flipup' facility which enhances access across the front of the seat when passage is required in use to and from adjacent seating areas.
According to a fourth aspect, the invention provides an aeroplane seat 30 wherein the seatback and the seat support portion are of low loft.
3 The low loft is achieved by providing a webbing of woven fibre held within a frame for each of the seatback and the seat support portion. Such an arrangement in contrast to conventional seating, which is upholstered, presents a reduced dimension to the seatback which in turn affords the opportunity to increase seating pitch, thus enhancing passenger comfort.
According to a fifth aspect of the invention, there is provided a seat support portion for an aeroplane scat in which there is disposed at least one inflatable section, the degree. of inflation being controllable.
Means are preferably provided for inflating and deflating the section according to requirements and advantageously such means are integral with the seat. For example, a compact air pump bulb and release valve could be provided for this purpose.
One of the problems attendant upon air travel is that associated with being seated for prolonged periods with little opportunity for movement.
Constant pressure on the underside of the thighs can cause deep vein thrombosis and the means for varying the pressure such as are proposed herein would alleviate or obviate this potential problem.
By way of example one embodiment of each of the aspects of aeroplane seat according to the invention is described below with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seat in the reclined position; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the seat of Figure 1 in an upright position; 4 Figure 3 is perspective view of an armrest in a partially closing position; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the armrest of Figure 3 in a closed position adjacent the seatbacks of adjacent seats; Figure 5 is a perspective view of the scat with the seat support portion in the 'down' seating position; Figure 6 is a perspective view of the seat of Figure 5 in an 'up' position; Figure 7 is a perspective view of a seat according to the fourth aspect of the invention; and Figure 8 is a perspective view of a seat support portion according to a fifth aspect of the invention.
Referring first to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, an aeroplane scat is shown at 1 and includes a seatback 2 in fixed relationship with a seat support portion 4. The seatback 2 and the portion 4 each have a lug 6, 8 extending outwardly therefrom on each side thereof, and each lug 6, 8 engages an arcuate guide 10, 12 respectively.
The interrelationship as between the lugs 6, 8 and the guides 10. 12 is such as to give the scat 1 a virtual axis 14 of rotation about which the scat 1 is adapted to move as and when desired, the seat being lockable in any desired position at and between fully reclining and fully upright.
The advantage of the seat according to the invention is that of enhanced comfort whereby the scat essentially rocks into the desired position.
Referring now to Figures 3 and 4, the armrest 20 comprises two parts 22, 24, the part 22 being hollow to accommodate the other part 24 in the closed, parked, position (Figure 4). The part 24 is pivoted to the side of the seat 1 and the part 22 is in turn pivoted to the part 24 as shown, the parts being lockable in the open position to provide the requisite support for an arm. The adjacent seatbacks 2 are recessed as at 26 to accommodate the closed armrest 20 as shown in Figure 4. The arrow W/W indicate the manner of closure from the open position, the parts essentially folding one into the other as in the manner of a penknife.
The improved armrest is not intrusive into the seating area or into the seatback per se.
Referring now to Figures 5 and 6, an aeroplane seat 1 has a seatback 2 and a seat support portion 4, the portion 4 being of the 'flip-up' type in which it can be moved from a down position into an up position (Figure 6). This arrangement is especially advantageous in that it allows ease of passage between rows of seats thus allowing better access to the trapped non-aisle seats.
Figure 7 shows a seat 1 of low loft being made of a webbing 41 of woven fibre held in seatback frame 40 and seat support portion frame 42. The reduced thickness of the seatback allows a more generous seating pitch thus giving passengers greater comfort.
Figure 8 illustrates a seat support portion 4 which incorporates within the relatively front thigh support area a series of inflatable bladders 50, 52 and 56, a compact air pump bulb 60 with a release valve (not shown) being provided integrally of the seat support portion.
In use, the passenger would inflate or deflate the bladders in order to generate the desired degree of comfort.
6 The aeroplane seat according to any one of its aspects or any combination thereof represents an improved passenger seating environment.
