Abstract
A backing board 13 carrying a print and a covering glass sheet 14 are mounted in a rabbet 12 of a frame made up of profile strips 10. A groove 17 behind the rabbet 12 receives a resilient mounting strip 15 of rectangular section. One edge of the strip 15 bears against the back of the board 13 and the other edge against a side wall 18 of the groove 17 which acts as an abutment. <IMAGE>
Description
METHOD OF MOUNTING PICTURES IN FRAMES
The present invention relates to a method of mounting pictures and the like in frames.
Conventionally a picture, which includes any matter to be displayed, whether written, painted or printed, is mounted in a frame for hanging on a wall or standing on a horizontal supporting surface. The picture may be in a material which is inherently stiff or may be mounted to a stiff mount. A backing board can be provided for protection and for increased stiffness and the picture or mount can be fixed to the backing board or lie loosely against it. The front of the picture can be protected by a sheet of glass or left exposed. The whole picture assembly, including glass, backing board and mount when provided, is fitted in a frame which is commonly assembled from lengths of profiled strip, and is secured in the frame by means of pins, nails or other devices which lie against the back of the picture assembly and hold the front of the picture assembly against a rabbet in the frame.
The conventional fastening devices have to be applied individually by hand and require some skill to place them correctly so that the picture assembly is held securely.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a method of mounting pictures and the like in frames in which the frame has a groove on its inner periphery into which a locking strip is placed which bears with one edge against the back of the picture assembly and with the other edge against a wall of the groove.
The locking strip is preferably hard lilt resilient to provide a firm grip. A synthetic foam material is suitable. To prevent the locking strip stiffening against the back of the picture assembly as a result of shock or vibration a coating of non-slip material, for example a felt, can be applied to the periphery of the back of the picture assembly. Such a coating, if made of a resilient material, could be used with a rigid locking strip to ensure a finn grip on the picture assembly.
Preferably the frame has a conventional rabbet in which the picture assembly is fitted and the groove for the locking strip is imnediately behind the rabbet. The groove preferably has an inclined wall sloping outwards from the back of the rabbet and a step at the back of the inclined wall. The locking strip then lies with its front edge against the picture assembly, its face against the inclined wall, and its back edge against the step.
The step may be parallel to the back of the picture assembly or somewhat inclined fran true p allelism.
The invention will be described in more detail with the aid of an example illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a cross-section of part of a picture frame with a picture assembly mounted therein by the method of the invention.
The e frame is formed from lengths of profiled wooden strip of which a profile strip 10 forming one side of the frame is shown.
The strip 10 has a conventional decorative moulding on its front face 11 and a rabbet 12 on its inner edge to receive the picture assembly, which in this case consists of a board 13 on which a print is mounted and a glass sheet 14. The picture assembly is located in the rectangular rabbet 12 and is held in place by a locking strip 15.
The strip 15, which is initially of rectangular cross-section, lies with one face against a sloping wall 16 of a re receiving groove 17 formed in the inner edge of the profile strip 10. The e wall 16 starts fran the back oorner of the rabbet 12 and is inclined outwards from the picture assembly. It terminates at a step 18 forming the back wall of the groove 17 and serving as an abutment for the rear edge of the locking strip 15. The step 18 is parallel to the back of the board 13.
Claims (9)
1. A method of mounting pictures and the like in frames in which the frame has a groove on its inner periphery into which a locking strip is placed which bears with one edge against the back of the picture assembly and with the other edge against a wall of the groove.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which a non-slip material is applied to the periphery of the back of the picture assembly and is engaged by the said one edge of the strip.
3. A method as claimed in claim 2 in which the non-slip material is resilient and the locking strip is rigid.
4. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the locking strip is of a hard but resilient material to provide a firm grip.
5. A method as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the frame has a rabbet in which the picture assembly is fitted and the groove for the locking strip is immediately behind the rabbet.
6. A method as claimed in claim 5 in which the groove has an inclined wall sloping outwards from the back of the rabbet and a step at the back of the inclined wall, the step providing the groove wall against which the locking strip bears.
7. A method as claimed in claim 6 in which the step is parallel to the back of the picture assembly.
8. A framed picture produced by the method of any of the preceding claims.
9. A method of mounting pictures and the like in frames substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
