Abstract
The package for injection comprises a solvent chamber (10) containing solvent (11) and a syringe (13, 18) containing the drug/substance. The two are separated by a breakable diaphragm (12) and the syringe (13, 18) is held within the casing (19) which is an extension of the solvent chamber (10). A circular seal (15) between the casing (19) and the syringe barrel (13) ensures sterility of the contents. To operate, the syringe nozzle (16) is a pushed through the breakable diaphragm (12) simultaneously breaking the circular seal (15) thus permitting withdrawal of the solvent (11) into the syringe barrel (13). After dissolution of the drug/substance (17), the syringe (13, 18) is separated from the casing (19) and the dissolved drug/substance is ready for injection. <IMAGE>
Description
ALL-IN-ONE DRUG/SUBSTANCE AND SOLVENT PACKAGE FOR INJECTION
This invention relates to an all-in one drug/substance and solvent package for injection.
Solid or liquid substances which have to be dissolved or diluted prior to administration are conventionally packaged in separate containers. In order to mix the two the appropriate volume of solvent/diluent is withdrawn from one container and injected into the other using a conventional syringe and hypodermic needle. Therefore the equipment needed for the administration of such substances is: one glass vial containing a standard volume of solvent/diluent; one syringe and hypodermic needle; one rubber sealed container containing the substance to be administered.The sequential steps in the preparation and administration of such substances are as follows: snapping open a glass vial and withdrawing the appropriate volume of snlvtdiluent using a syringe and needle; injecting the solvent/diluent into the container containing the substance to be administered; shaking to mix the two; withdrawing the resulting solution: injecting the solution directly into the recipient or removing the needle and injecting via a suitable portal of entry.
The conventional method of preparation of substances for injection as described above is, however, both time consuming and expensive by virtue of the number of procedures and number of independently supplied items involved. Moreover, the presently employed procedure involves disposal of sharps, risk of injury to the user, the possibility of lluman error and poor aseptic technique.
According to the present invention there is provided an all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection. This comprises a syringe containing a measured quantity of substance, an attached solvent chamber containig the appropiate volume of solvent/diluent, a breakable diaphragm providing a separation between the solvent chamber and the syringe and a seal for securing attachment of the syringe to the casing and the sterility of sts contents. In addition there is provided a small hole in the syringe barrel, for means of escape of air or instillation of substances, which is later sealed.
A specific embodimerzt of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective the a3i-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection.
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal section of the all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection.
Figure 3 shows a view of the diaphragm from the solvent chamber.
Figure 4 shows a longitudinal section of the all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection after having broken the seal and the diaphragm by means of pushing together the syringe barrel and the solvent chamber'
Figure 5 shows a longitudinal section of the all-in-one drug/sustance and solvent package for injection after having drawn the solvent into the syringe barrel.
Figure 6 shows a longitudinal section of the syringe and solvent chamber after detachment from one another.
With reference to the figures the all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection comprises a solvent chamber (10) containing the solvent (11) sealed by a breakable diaphragm (12). The syringe barrel (13) fits into the casing (19) which is an extension of the solvent chamber (10) and is attached to this by a circular seal (15) in such a way that the syringe nozzle (16) is closely applied to the breakable diaphragm (12)
The syringe barrel (13) contains the drug (17) and its plunger (is).
In order to mix the drug (17) and the solvent (11) force is applied to push the syringe barrel (13) and the solvent chamber (io) together thereby permitting the syringe nozzle (16) to penetrate the breakable diaphragm (12) thus gaining access to the solvenL (It). The circular seal (15) is simultaneously broken. This done, by drawing on the plunger (18) extraction of the solvent (11) from the solvent chamber (to) into the syringe barrel (13) is effected. Once the solvent (it) is within the syringe barrel (13) the syringe barrel is separated from the casing (19).
To achieve dissolution of the drug the syringe (13 and 1S) is shaken. The drug is then in a suitable form for injection.
Claims (3)
1 The essential features of the all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection are that the drugsubstance to be injected is packaged in an air-tight environment within the syringe and subsequently dissolved within the syringe which is to be used for its injection, tht the appropriate solvent is incorporated into the unit also in an air-tight environment, and that the drug/substance and its appropriate solvent are separated by a diaphragm or any other means of separation which when broken or removed allows the drug/substance and solvent to be mixed.
2 An all-in-one rugsubsiance and solvent package for injection as in claim 1 wherein the drug/substance is contained in the solvent chamber and the solvent is contained in the syringe.
3 An all-in-one drug/substance and solvent package for injection sustantially as described herein with reference to figures 1 to 6 of the accompanying drawings.
