Abstract

A socket cluster for attachment to a scaffolding upright is blanked out of a strip of metal. The blank is bent to provide the sockets 10, 11, 12, 13 with a gap between the ends 14, 15 of the strip. The ends 14, 15 and the tips 16 of the sockets are welded to the upright. The sockets may all be at the same level, or the sockets 10, 12 may be at a different level to the sockets 11, 13. The sockets are used to secure horizontal members to the upright. <IMAGE>

Description

STRUCTURES SUITABLE FOR USE IN SCAFFOLDING BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION This invention relates to structures suitable for use in scaffolding.
In one known scaffolding system a tubular upright is provided at different levels along its height with clusters of sockets. The sockets are used to secure horizontal members to the upright. As originally conceived each cluster comprised a number of (usually four) U-shaped elements welded to the upright. The welding operation involved is rather difficult and expensive for the desired end result.
It has therefore been proposed (see SA patent specification No. 72/5861) to form the clusters as a unitary body which could be positioned at any position along the length of an upright. This prior proposal has never, to the best of the applicant's knowledge, been adopted in practice probably because it did not in fact lead to a simplification and a saving in costs.
SUMMARY or THE INVENTION According to the invention a cluster is formed by blanking out a strip of metal to the correct length and shape and then bending the blank preferably in a press, to the correct cluster configuration with a gap between the ends of the strip so that the ends may be welded to an upright at the same time as the tips of the sockets are so welded, DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a top view of one embodiment, Figure 2 is a view of a strip blanked out before bending to the shape shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a view in the direction of the arrow A in Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 of a cluster bent from a plain rectangular blank.
DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS Figure 1 shows a cluster of sockets which have been numbered 10, 11, 12 and 13. This cluster has been press bent from a blank stamped out to the shape shown in Figure 2. The bending has been performed to leave a small space between the edges 14 and 15 of the metal strip. In use the cluster is welded in position on an upright shown in chainline in Figure 1 along the edges 14 and 15 and top and bottom at the lines marked 16.
The resulting product is an upright with clusters of sockets, the sockets 10 and 12 being at a different level to the sockets 11 and 13.
In an alternative embodiment a rectangular strip of metal is bent to the configuration outlined in Figure I to give the cluster shown in side view in Figure 4. In this case welding to the upright takes place on the lines 14 and 15 and at points 17.

Claims (7)

CLAIMS:
1.
A method of forming a socket cluster for attachment to a tubular member comprising blanking out a strip of metal to the correct length and shape and then bending the blank to the correct cluster configuration with a gap between the ends of the strip so that the ends may be welded to a member at the same time as the tips of the sockets are so welded.
2.
The method claimed in claim 1 in which the blank is bent In a press.
3.
The method claimed in either one of the above claims in which the blank is rectangular so that all the sockets will be at the same level.
4.
The method claimed in either one of claims 1 or 2 in which the blank is stepped so that opposed sockets will be at the same level and alternate sockets at different levels.
5.
A method of forming a socket cluster substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3 and Figures 1 and 4.
6.
A method of forming an upright for use in scaffolding comprising the step of welding a cluster as formed by the method of any one of the above claims to a tubular member at a selected position by welding the ends of the strip and the tips of the sockets to the member.
7.
A scaffolding upright substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3 or Figures 1 and 4.
