Description
2 2- 0 2 7 2 7 arette Filter
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
This invention relates to a filter for cigarettes.
It has already been proposed to provide cigarettes with filters in which smoke from the burning cigarette and secondary air drawn from the side of the filter pass to the smoker. Known filters of this kind do not yield a suitable "taste". The applicant believes that this is due to inadequate mixing of the smoke and secondary air.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention a cigarette filter is composed of two filter elements arranged end to end, the first element closer to the smoker being impervious to secondary air while the second element allows the entry of secondary air and there being an annular impervious baffle between the two elements so that secondary air and smoke are forced to pass close to the axis of the filter into the first element.
Further according to the invention $the first element is wrapped in an air-impervious material which overlaps one end of the first element and the overlapping material is pressed and folded on to the end of the first element to form an annular cap which abuts the second element in use.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a cigarette; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a filter element enclosed in impervious paper; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 with the paper folded down; Figure 4 is a view partly in section showing a further step in the manufacture of a filter Figure 5 is a diagrammatic view of a filter making part of a cigarette machine; and Figure 6 is a section on the line 6-6 in Figure 4.
DESCRIPTION OF AN EMBODIMENT
Figure 1 shows a cigarette embodying the principles of the invention. There is a tobacco rod 10 wrapped in a conventional k manner in cigarette paper. The rod 10 abuts a filter section 11 made of estron tow and wrapped in high porosity paper 12, e.g. paper with holes 13. Next to the section 1 there is another section 14 wrapped in air- impervious paper 15 folded over at 16 to form an annulus around a central hole 17. The sections 14 and 11 and the rod 10 are joined together with a sleeve of highly porous paper 18, e.g. having holes 19 that register with the holes 13.
The cigarette shown in Figure 1 has on test been found to have a very good taste. This is attributed to the fact that air from the burning ember, which normally flows along the cigarette is joined by air entering from the sides of the section 11 to pass through the hole 17 and into the section 14. There is thus thorough mixing of smoke and secondary air before the smoke enters the mouth of the smoker.
A basic step in connection with the cigarette is the making of the section 14. Essentially paper 15 is wrapped around a double length 14 of estron tow as shown in Figure 2 with overlaps at each end. The overlapping edges are then turned down and pressed against the section 14 to produce the object shown in Figure 3.
To make filters the objects of Figure 3 are assembled in a conventional assembler in the manner shown in Figure 5. The objects 14.2 are assembled end to end as shown. Before being assembled to cigarette rods 10 a cut is made along the line 20-20 and at the ends. After each section thus separated has been united to a rod section 11, cuts are made along the lines 21-21 to form separate cigarettes.
All the procedures outlined above are conventional except for the making of the objects of Figure 3. Figures 5 and 6 show a machine for making such objects. Paper 30 from a roll 31 is passed over a glued roller 32 to a drum 33 on which it is cut by a cutter wheel 34. Filter rods 14 are fed to a drum 35 and turned around to pick up strips of paper from the drum 34. The rods 14 with the attached strips are rolled on a drum 36 to form the objects of Figure 2.
A transfer drum 37 transfers the Figure 2 objects to a folder drum 38 on which the overlapping paper ends are pressed back on to the rods 14 by means of pusher caps 40 (Figure 6). This forms the objects of Figure 3 which are then dropped on to a conveyor belt 41 feeding an assembler.
