Description
BALL BlARING AND BlARING BALL THEREFOR
This invention relates to a ball bearing with a cage and the bearing balls therefor.
In certain applications, it is required to reduce the overall width of a ball bearing with a cage and, if the ball diameter cannot be reduced with respect to the distance between the tracks of the outer and inner bearing, then the present construction is intended to provide a means to achieve a bearing width reduction in particular applications where the bearing is basically subject only to radial loading.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a bearing ball of spherical form but provided with at least one flat.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a ball bearing with a cage and having bearing balls, each bearing ball being of spherical form but provided with at least one flat.
Preferably, two opposed parallel flats are provided. To achieve minimum width of bearing, the two flats are located equi-distant from the centre of the ball. Alternatively, the two flats can be located at different distances from the centre of the ball.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional view of a ball bearing with a cage, and
Figures 2 and 3 are views, similar to Figure 1, of respective modifications.
Referring to Figure 1, it will be seen that the ball bearing comprises an outer bearing ring 1, an inner bearing ring 2, a two-piece cage 3 and a ball 4. The cage could instead be a one-piece cage or otherwise as desired for the particular application.
Each ball 4 of the bearing is of basically spherical form but the extent of the spherical surface 4A is limited to a desired proportion of that of a complete sphere of the same diameter, by being provided with opposed, parallel flats 5, 6 located equi-distant from the centre 7 of the ball 4.
Balls 4 of this shape are then fitted in the bearing rings 1, 2, with the cage 3 being formed with pockets to constrain the balls 4 such that the spherical surface 4A of each ball 4 will always be presented to the respective tracks of the outer and inner rings 1, 2.
The modification shown in Figure 2 shows the possibility of two opposed flats 5A, 6A, which are not equi-distant from the centre 7 of the ball 4.
The modification shown in Figure 3 shows another possibility where only one flat 6B is provided, the opposed "non-running" surface SB retaining its spherical form.
In all embodiments, the diameter of the spherical surface 4A is maintained so as to run on the tracks of the bearing rings 1, 2.
