Abstract
A portable barbecue comprises folding legs 11, a removable grill (15, Fig. 2) and extensible side leaves 12. The barbecue has a lightweight, durable body body which makes it readily portable. Extensible leaves 12, when in the extended position, may act as a work surface or a warm storage area. Legs 11 when not in use are held in the folded position by use of spring washers, bolts and close tolerance friction. The barbecue is also designed to carry a quantity of firewood or charcoal in the cavity formed by the body and the extensible leaves when in the retracted position. <IMAGE>
Description
PORTABLE MINI-BARBECUE
This invention relates to a small, portable barbecue.
2arbecues are usually of the static variety, almost by definition Truly portable (i.2. lightweight, compact and durable) barbecues in Britain are very few in numoer. An overwhelming majority claiming to be portable are cumbersome, weighty and tedious to assemble; if the design is robust, the macnine is difficult to move over any distance; if it -s light it is unlikely to last more than a season and will therefor =e disproportionately expensive.
This invention is a durable, lightweight, inexpensive portable barbecue machine which provides an economic cooking base with a strong bias towards safety. The mila steel body, coated in stove ceramic (or similar substance) is aesthetically pleasing, hygienic and safe nile the removeole stainless steel grill is also hygienic and able to withstand prolanged cooking heat.
leaves
The extensible offer a working surface and a 'warm-storage' area when extended.Closed, they form a platform which can be use as a riddle or on which pots can be placed for boiling/simmering liquids.Shen not in use as a cooking or warming surface, the leaves are fully closed, providing a secure compartment in which can be carried a packaged amount of fuel (charcoal or good) sufficient for four hours of cooking.
The folding legs are fitted to the body with bolts and sorung washes.
When folded uo for porterage, the washers, plus the close tolerance of the fitting ensure the laps remain securely in place therefore obviating any need for retaining clips.
The features outlined above are exampled in the accompanyig figures:
Fig.1 shows in side elevation the barbecue with right-hand leaf fully extended.
Fig.2 Shows the grill positlon;the right-hand leaf extended and the position of tne laps, in Plan.
Fig.3 Shows the end elevation with detail of the tracks along which the leaves slide. It also shows the air-intake holes.
Referring to the drawings, the barbecue comprises a body in the form of a box (10) with extensible leaves (1Z), two sets of self-lockinc legs (11), a carryino-handle (13) and the grill-retaining zlios (14).
To set up the machine, the legs are broupnt away fom the body in the opposite direction to tne arrows (Fig 1). The grill (15) is placed off-centre with 'nick' (15a) dropping over the retaining clip and then slid into place (16 & 17) providing a locking action in conjunction with opposite clips (14). The leaves, until in the close potion (see left hal of Fig 2) can be extended (seE right half of Fig 2).
When bath leaves are closed, the 'key-hole' provided by the cutouts (18) give access to the direct heat of the fire without contact between the coals and the cooking receotacle.
When fully extended, the leaves are prevented fom fully withdrawing from the tracks by a restraining lip on their leading edges (19).
The tracks of the leaves are provided by a double folded lip on the leaf (20) and a single fold on the body of the macnine (20a).
The air-intake holes (21) are so placed as to provide a maximum of
out through-draught with producing a 'balsk-furnace' effect.
Once the apparatus has been used and the ashes removed, reversing the setting-uc procedure is all that is necessary to return tne barbecue to its original "suitcase" form.
