Abstract
To enable a child to use an adult vehicle safety belt, a cushion 10 has a respective belt guide on each side thereof to enable the lap strap of the adult belt to inhibit forward movement of the cushion 10. An auxiliary strap 30 is attached to the cushion by a manually operable strap adjuster 50 located between the user's legs. The strap 30 extends through a slot 32 in the cushion towards the rear edge thereof. A belt guide connector 38 is secured to the auxiliary strap 30 and, in use, engages with the shoulder strap of the adult belt. <IMAGE>
Description
CHILD'S SAFETY DEVICE
This invention relates to a safety device for enabling a child to use an adult vehicle safety belt having a shoulder strap and a lap strap, of the type comprising a cushion having a respective belt guide on each side thereof to enable the lap strap to inhibit forward movement of the cushion, an auxiliary strap attached to the cushion, a belt guide connector secured to the auxiliary member, and adjustment means for adjusting the length of the auxiliary strap, whereby when the cushion is disposed on a vehicle seat, each side of the lap strap is engageable in the respective belt retainer to retain the cushion against forward movement, and the shoulder strap is received in the belt guide connector so that, in use, auxiliary strap extends behind the user's torso and the shoulder strap extends in front of the user's torso with the belt guide connector located above the user's shoulder. A safety device of this type is disclosed in EP-A-0066372.
When using a safety device of this type, the length of the auxiliary strap should be adjusted so as to position the shoulder strap of the adult seat belt accurately across the shoulder of the child user. The present invention aims to provide means whereby the length of the auxiliary strap may be adjusted when the child user is seated on the cushion.
According to the invention, in a safety device of the type described above, the auxiliary strap is attached to the cushion by a manually operable strap adjuster located between the user's legs and extends therefrom through a slot in the cushion towards the rear edge thereof.
The adjuster may take the form of a three-bar link held in abutment with an upper surface or a front surface of the cushion by the auxiliary strap.
Preferably, the belt guide connector is arranged to inhibit sliding movement of the adult shoulder belt therethrough.
In one form of the invention, the cushion is provided with a backrest and the auxiliary strap extends upwardly behind the backrest and thence through a slot therein, the belt guide connector being located in front of the backrest.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of a safety device in accordance with the invention, having a backrest;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the safety device shown in Figure 1 but with the adult seat belt not shown;
Figure 3 is a scrap perspective view of the belt guide connector of the safety device shown in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the strap adjuster for the seat shown in Figures 1 and 2; and
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional view similar to
Figure 2 but showing the seat cushion without the backrest.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a safety device in accordance with the invention comprises a seat cushion 10 and a backrest 12. The seat cushion 10 has side wings 14 and 16 with upstanding rear portions 18 and 20, the lap strap 22 of an adult seat belt engaging in the angle between the side wing 14 and the rear portion 18 on one side and the side wing 16 and the rear portion 20 on the other. The backrest 12 has side walls 24 and 26, the bottom edges of which rest on the top edges of the rear portions 18 and 20 respectively. Means for coupling the backrest to the seat cushion in a safety device of this type are well known and, since they do not form part of the present invention, they will not be described in detail.
In accordance with the invention, an auxiliary strap 30 extends downwardly through a slot 32 in the cushion 10 from a position between the legs of a child occupant 34. The auxiliary strap 30 then extends round the rear edge of the cushion 10, up the back of the backrest 12 and through a slot 36 in the latter where its free end is attached to a belt guide connector 38. As can be seen from
Figure 3, the connector 38 is of generally T-shaped shape with the crossbar of the T-shape forming a three-bar link with central slots in its outer bars 40 and 42. The auxiliary strap 30 is attached to an additional bar 44 at the end of the stem of the T-shape. As can be seen from
Figure 1, the shoulder strap 46 of the adult seat belt is threaded under the outer bars 40 and 42 and over the central bar 48 of the three-bar adjuster. The position of the belt guide connector 38 on the shoulder strap 46 can therefore readily be adjusted when the shoulder strap 46 is slack but such movement is inhibited when the shoulder strap 46 is tight.
At the upper end of the slot 32 in the base, the auxiliary strap 30 is threaded through a conventional three-bar adjuster 50 as is shown in detail in Figure 4.
In use, after the adult seat belt has been fastened, the auxiliary strap 30 is pulled through the three-bar adjuster 50 to hold the belt guide connector 38 in the position illustrated just above the shoulder of the child user 34.
In order to make provision for children of different heights, a second slot 52 is provided in the seat back 12 below the slot 36. Further slots may be provided if desired. As can be seen from Figure 1, a slot 54, equivalent to the slot 36, is provided on the other side of the seat back to enable the seat to be used with an adult belt in which the shoulder strap runs over the occupant's right shoulder rather than over the left shoulder as illustrated. There is also an equivalent slot to the slot 52 below the slot 54 but this is not visible in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 5, when the cushion 10 is to be used by an older child, the backrest 12 may be omitted and the belt guide connector 38 used to position the shoulder strap 46 of the adult seat belt in the correct position, in the manner illustrated in EP-A-0066372.
