Abstract

The invention provides an apparatus and method for installing window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle. Preferably the window glass is a replacement windscreen. The apparatus comprises a support bar 3 attached to the motor vehicle and a window glass holder 14 that can be supported movably on the support bar to permit accurate positioning of the window glass while most of the weight of the window glass is supported on the support bar. Preferably the support bar is a rigid pole of circular cross-section and the window glass holder is movably supported thereon by means of a resilient roller (20, figure 2) fixed to the window glass holder and configured to roll along the top of the supporting bar without slipping. <IMAGE>

Description

APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR INSTALLING WINDOWS The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for installing window glass in motor vehicles, and in particular for installing replacement windscreens in motor vehicles.
Windscreen replacement is an important part of the motor vehicle repair market, especially the breakdown repair market. The standard procedures for installing a replacement windscreen are too well known to require detailed description. Essentially, following preparation of the windscreen aperture, suction cap handles are attached to the exterior surface of the replacement windscreen and the windscreen is manually lifted and positioned in the windscreen aperture. The windscreen is then secured in place by fitting glazing gaskets, etc.
A frequently encountered problem with the above procedure is that the windscreen is too heavy to be lifted and positioned accurately by a single person without excessive physical effort. This is especially true of truck wind screens and the windscreens of more modern aerodynamically styled cars that have large windscreen surface areas. In garages or repair stations, free-standing supports have been used, windscreens being hung from a support, so that the weight of the windscreen is taken by the support and an installer can then manoeuvre the windscreen into place. Such supports are, however, unsuitable to be carried in vehicles, in the event that a windscreen needs to be replaced off site. Hitherto the problem has been addressed by employing two or more people to lift and position the heavier windscreens.This has resulted in additional costs, especially for breakdown services that normally only operate with a single employee in a breakdown truck.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an apparatus that will assist a single operator to install even the heaviest windscreens quickly, accurately and without excessive physical effort.
The present invention provides an apparatus to install window glass in a window glass aperture of a motor vehicle, the apparatus comprising: a support bar; releasable attachment means for attaching the support bar to a motor vehicle above and generally across a window glass aperture; a window glass holder comprising a releasable holding means for releasably holding window glass; and support means attached to the window glass holder and movable along the support bar to support the window glass holder movably on the support bar, whereby, in use, a window glass can be traversed across an aperture by moving the window glass holder along the support bar to locate the window glass in the aperture.
The window glass will normally be a windscreen. The support bar is preferably a straight bar and may be formed from a rigid, preferably lightweight material such as aluminium alloy tubing. The attachment means may comprise clamps such as the clamps used to attach a roof rack to the vehicle but, preferably, the support bar is attached to the motor vehicle by means of suction caps. The suction caps may be applied to motor vehicle panels or to side windows of a motor vehicle, but preferably the support bar is attached to a motor vehicle by means of suction caps attached to the side windows on either side of a windscreen aperture. These suction caps are preferably attached to the support bar through adjustable connecting members.
The releasable holding means of the window glass holder preferably comprise a suction cap for releasably holding the window glass while it is being positioned in the window aperture. The window glass holder suction cap is typically about 15-20 cm in diameter and of a kind well known in the window installation art. The window glass holder suction cap is preferably attached to an arm, preferably formed from a lightweight material such as aluminium alloy tubing. The arm is preferably cranked for ease of use.
The support means to support the window glass holder movably on the support bar preferably comprises a roller mounted on the window glass holder and configured so that the roller can roll along the top of the support bar. For the purpose of the present invention it is not necessary for the entire weight of the window glass to be supported by the support bar. The roller is preferably formed from a resilient material such as synthetic rubber and is preferably circumferentially profiled to engage the top of the support bar.
In alternative embodiments of the present invention the window glass holder support means may comprise a sliding collar or clamp attached to the window glass holder. For example, if the support bar is a bar of uniform crosssection the sliding clamp may be provided with a bore of dimensions slightly greater than the diameter of the support bar to engage the support bar when closed, whereby the clamp is slidably movable along the support bar when closed, and opening the clamp allows the window glass holder to be detached from the supporting bar. In still other embodiments the window glass holder support means may comprise a sliding member that can be slidably engaged in a longitudinal slot in the support bar.In any case, the support means supports the window glass holder on the support bar while allowing the window glass holder to be moved back and forth along the support bar so as to position the window glass attached to the window glass holder in the window aperture.
In order to achieve accurate vertical positioning of window glass (that is to say, positioning in directions perpendicular to the support bar) the apparatus preferably also comprises a window glass vertical positioning indicator, which indicator is preferably movably attached to the window glass holder, for indicating a window glass aperture reference position. The vertical positioning indicator is preferably a resilient mandrel, such as a synthetic rubber mandrel, movably attached to the window glass holder. In use, the vertical positioning indicator is preferably used to indicate the central position of the top of the window glass aperture. The window glass is then attached to the window glass holder with the top centre of the window glass at the position marked by the vertical positioning indicator.This ensures that, when the window glass holder is supported on the support bar, the window glass is in the correct vertical position to be placed into the window aperture.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a method for installing window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle by means of an apparatus according to the invention, the method comprising: attaching the support bar to the motor vehicle with the support bar extending above and generally across the window aperture; attaching the window glass to the window glass holder by means of the releasable holding means; using the support means, supporting the window glass holder having the window glass attached thereto on the support bar; and moving the window glass holder having the window glass attached thereto along the support bar until the window glass is positioned for insertion into the window aperture.
Preferably, where the apparatus is provided with the vertical positioning indicator, the method comprises the additional steps of: before the window is attached to the window glass holder, supporting the window glass holder on the supporting bar using the support means and adjusting the vertical positioning indicator to indicate a reference position of the window aperture, and attaching the window glass to the window glass holder by means of the releasable holding means such that the vertical positioning indicator is aligned with a point on the window glass which is to be at said aperture reference point. Preferably, the reference point is the top centre of the aperture.
Preferably the support bar extends substantially horizontally above and across the window aperture.
Preferably the support bar is attached to the motor vehicle by means of suction caps attached to the motor vehicle, and the releasable holding means for holding the window glass likewise preferably comprises a suction cap. Preferably, the window glass is a windscreen and the support bar is attached to the motor vehicle by means of a suction cap on each of two front side windows on either side of the motor vehicle, the supporting bar being connected to the suction caps on the side windows through respective upwardly extending members.
The apparatus according to the present invention will normally be supplied and transported as a kit of parts comprising the support bar, means to attach the support bar to the motor vehicle and window glass holder.
An embodiment of window installing apparatus and a installation method according to the present invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus according to the present invention being used to install a replacement windscreen in a motor vehicle.
Figure 2 is a detailed perspective view of part of the apparatus in Figure 1, showing the support means attached to the window glass holder and the vertical positioning indicator.
Figure 3 is a detailed plan view of part of the releasable attachment means to attach the supporting bars to the motor vehicle, and Figure 4 is a detailed plan view of another part of the releasable attachment means to attach the supporting bar to the motor vehicle.
Referring to the drawings, apparatus for installing a windscreen 1 in a motor vehicle 2 comprises a support bar 3 which is releasably attached to the motor vehicle 2 by means of two suction caps 4, of standard, generally available design, attached to front side windows 5 of the motor vehicle. Each suction cap is joined to a connecting member 6 of aluminium alloy tubing, which is joined to the supporting bar 3 by means of an adjustable joint 7. The support bar and connecting member are formed from straight lengths of aluminium alloy tubing, although other materials and configurations could be used.
Referring to Figure 3, each suction cap 4 is joined to the associated connecting member 6 by means of a pivot 8, which allows the suction cap to be applied to a non-vertical window surface while maintaining the connecting member 6 substantially vertical. The pivot 8 can be tightened to secure the connecting member at a desired angular position relative to the suction cap 4.
The adjustable joint 7 is shown in detail in Figure 4.
It consists of a block 9 having cylindrical bores 10, 11 arranged at right angles. The diameter of the bores 10, 11 is slightly greater than the diameter of the aluminium alloy tubing used to make the support bar 3 and the connecting member 6, as a result of which the support bar 3 and connecting member 6 are slidably movable in their respective bores 10, 11 to allow adjustment of the clamp 7. The block 9 also has small, threaded bores drilled perpendicular to the bores 10, 11 and fitted with grub screws 12, 13 that can be tightened to clamp the supporting bar 3 and the connecting member 6 in position.
Referring again to Figure 1, the apparatus further comprises a window glass holder 14, comprising a window glass holder suction cap 15 for holding the windscreen 1, a cranked body 16 of aluminium alloy tubing and a roller bracket 17 fixed to the top of the cranked body 16, the roller bracket 17 supporting a roller 20. There is a vertical positioning indicator 18 movably attached to the cranked body 16. The window glass suction cap 15 is 15 to 20 cm in diameter and of a type well known in the window installation art.
The arrangement of the roller bracket 17 and the vertical positioning indicator 18 is shown in more detail in Figure 2. The roller bracket 17 is fixed to the cranked body 16 of the window glass holder by means of a bolt 19.
The roller 20 is housed in the roller bracket 17 with the axis of rotation 21 of the roller 20 substantially parallel to longitudinal axis of the associated end of the cranked body 16. The roller 20 is formed from a resilient synthetic rubber material and the circumference 21 of the roller is profiled to engage the top of the tubular support bar 3 without slipping.
The vertical positioning indicator 18 comprises a resilient mandrel 22 attached to a collar 23 which is slidably fitted on the cranked body 16 of the window glass holder. A grub screw 24 is fitted in a threaded bore in the collar 23, whereby tightening the grub screw 24 secures the collar 23 and mandrel 22 at a desired position. The resilient mandrel is formed from synthetic rubber, although other materials are also suitable.
In operation, the above apparatus is used as follows.
First, the motor vehicle 2 is prepared by rolling up the side windows 5 and applying protective sheeting (not shown) to the roof. The windscreen aperture is prepared in the usual way. Then the suction caps 4 with the connecting members 6 attached thereto are attached to the side windows 5, preferably near the bottom of the side windows, and the pivots 8 are adjusted and then screwed tight so that the connecting members 6 are held in a substantially vertical position. Then the support bar 3 is fitted to the connecting members 6 by means of the joints 7 such that the support bar 3 is substantially horizontal and extends transversely across the top of the windscreen aperture approximately 5cm above the top of the vehicle roof. The grub screws 12 on the joints 7 are tightened to secure the support bar in this position.
The next step in the procedure is to locate the window glass vertical positioning indicator 18. This is done by supporting the window glass holder 14 on the support bar 3 by means of the roller 20 as shown in Figure 1, but without the windscreen attached. The window glass holder 14 is rolled along the support bar 3 on the roller 20 until the roller is above the centre of the windscreen aperture. The window glass holder is then pivoted downwardly about the support bar 3 until the face of the first suction cap 15 on the window glass holder is roughly at the position that will be occupied by the windscreen when it is installed. The position of the resilient mandrel 22 is then adjusted by sliding the collar 23 along the cranked body 16 of the window glass holder until the resilient mandrel is touching the top of the windscreen aperture.The resilient mandrel 22 is secured in this position by tightening the grub screw 24 in the collar 23.
The window glass holder 14 is then removed from the support bar by lifting the roller 22 off the support bar.
The windscreen is prepared for installation by applying primers, mouldings etc. The window glass holder 14 is then attached to the windscreen 1 by means of the suction cap 15.
The suction cap 15 is positioned so that, following attachment of the windscreen to the window glass holder, the cranked body of the window glass holder is substantially perpendicular to the transverse axis of the windscreen and the resilient mandrel of the window glass holder is touching the top edge of the windscreen. A further suction cap handle 25 is attached to the windscreen to assist lifting and positioning of the windscreen.
The window glass holder having the windscreen attached thereto is lifted back onto the support bar 3 and is supported on the support bar by the roller 22. The support bar 3 does not carry the whole weight of the windscreen because the window glass holder does not hang straight down.
However, enough of the weight of the windscreen 1 is carried by the support bar 3 to make the job of positioning the windscreen easy for a single operator to perform.
The windscreen is positioned in the windscreen aperture as follows. Horizontal positioning is achieved by rolling the window glass holder having the windscreen attached thereto along the support bar 3 by means of the roller 22.
The correct vertical positioning of the windscreen 1 has already been achieved by attaching the windscreen 1 to the window glass holder with the top edge of the windscreen touching the prepositioned resilient mandrel 22. Finally, the windscreen 1 is actually emplaced in the windscreen aperture by pivoting the window glass holder downwardly about the support bar 3. The further suction cap handle 25 allows the operator comfortably to use both hands to position the windscreen. Once the windscreen is emplaced in the windscreen aperture the windscreen fitting process is continued in the usual way by fitting glazing gaskets, etc.
It may be preferred to apply two suction cap handles 25 to the windscreen on either side of the window glass holder so that the operator can manipulate the windscreen by means of the suction cap handles 25 without having to grasp the window glass holder at all during the positioning step.
The above embodiment of the method and apparatus according to the present invention provides rapid, accurate and easy positioning of heavy windscreen with much reduced physical effort on the part of the operator. The apparatus is lightweight and can readily be disassembled for easy transport. The apparatus is adaptable to virtually any type of motor vehicle or window glass to be replaced. Finally, the apparatus is relatively simple and inexpensive.
The foregoing example has illustrated the fitting of a windscreen. It will be appreciated that other window glasses, such as rear windows or side glasses could be fitted in similar fashion.
The above embodiment of the present invention is described by way of example only. Many other embodiments falling within the scope of the present invention as defined by the claims will be apparent to the skilled reader.

Claims (17)

1. An apparatus to install window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle, the apparatus comprising: a support bar; a releasable attachment means for attaching the support bar to a motor vehicle above and generally across a window glass aperture; a window glass holder comprising a releasable holding means for releasably holding window glass; and support means attached to the window glass holder and movable along the support bar to support the window glass holder movably on the support bar, whereby, in use, a window glass can be traversed across an aperture by moving the window glass holder along the support bar to locate the window glass in the aperture.
2. An apparatus according to claim 1, further comprising a window glass vertical positioning indicator associated with the window glass holder.
3. An apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the window glass vertical positioning indicator comprises a resilient mandrel movably attached to the window glass holder.
4. An apparatus according to claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the releasable attachment means for attaching the support bar to a motor vehicle and/or the releasable holding means for releasably holding window glass comprise a suction cap.
5. An apparatus according to claim 4, wherein the releasable attachment means comprises a suction cap attached to a connecting member which is adjustably attached to the support bar.
6. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the support means comprises a roller.
7. An apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the support means comprises a clamp or collar.
8. An apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the support means comprises a sliding member attached to the window glass holder and slidably movable in a slot in the support bar.
9. An apparatus according to any preceding claim, wherein the support bar is a straight pole.
10. A method for installing window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle by means of an apparatus according to any preceding claim, the method comprising attaching the support bar to the motor vehicle with the support bar extending above and generally across the window aperture; attaching the window glass to the window glass holder by means of the releasable holding means; using the support means, supporting the window glass holder having the window glass attached thereto on the support bar; and moving the window glass holder having the window glass attached thereto along the support bar until the window glass is positioned for insertion into the window aperture.
11. A method according to claim 10 wherein the apparatus is according to claim 2 or 3 and the method further comprises: before the window is attached to the window glass holder, supporting the window glass holder on the support bar using the support means and adjusting the vertical positioning indicator to indicate a reference position of the window aperture, and attaching the window glass to the window glass holder by means of the releasable holding means such that the vertical positioning indicator is aligned with a point on the window glass which is to be at said apparatus reference point.
12. A method according to claim 11, wherein the reference point is the top centre of the apparatus.
13. A method according to any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein the support bar extends substantially horizontally across the window aperture above and across the window aperture.
14. A method according to any of claims 10 to 13, wherein the support bar is attached to the motor vehicle by means of a suction cap attached to the motor vehicle.
15. A method according to any of claims 10 to 14, wherein the window glass is a windscreen and the support bar is attached to the motor vehicle by means of a suction cap on each of two front side windows on either side of the motor vehicle and the support bar is connected to the suction caps through respective upwardly extending members.
16. An apparatus to install window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
17. A method of installing window glass in a window aperture of a motor vehicle substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
