Abstract
A height adjustable road gully/inspection cover assembly comprises an outer frame section C fixed in the road, which section receives an inner frame section B which, in turn, receives a grating or cover member D. If it is desired to raise the height of member D e.g. during road resurfacing, then section B may be removed, wedges E placed between C and B, and then section B replaced. <IMAGE>
Description
ADJUSTABLE ROAD GULLY & COVER.
This invention relates to road gulleys (drains), inspection covers and all other types of road surface covers.
Road gulleys and covers are a necessity on every public transport road except where an alternative method of drainage is used ire., motorways use French
Drains. Currently road- gulleys and inspection covers are not adjustable and once fixed into position they cannot be brought level to the new surface.
Over the years roads are continuously being resurfaced without drains being repositioned; the reason being this is an expensive procedure to undertake and
more often than not the drains are left in their original position, thus causing a 'pothole' which cause countless damage and danger to cars, motorcyclists and cyclists alike. Drains and covers that cause 'potholes' are a common public complaint.
The new design gully and cover is adjustable and can be brought to meet any new road surface level with relative ease.
The presently used design for gulleys and covers does not adjust.
The new invention for gulleys and covers adjusts by means of two basic, simple funcions; the first being the centre section 'B' sliding upwards and downwards and the second function involves wedge 'J' of a detailed thickness used to hold up the centre sliding section 'B'therefore enabling it to be adjusted to the new required height.
A cavity 'ill' approximately 2cm in depth is provided between top of section 'C' and section'B' fig 4, to allow for silt to be washed through to a larger cavity below, finally running through the cut out sections in wedges 'E' fig 1, and into the drainage system. This marginal cavity 'H' prevents any large surface area seizure between sections 'C' and 'B'. The use of tape or sustaining lubricant applied around the exposed sides of section 'B' and top of section'C' would help prevent possible seizure caused by a secretion of Bituminous material between these two sections. Road surfaces also shrink and crack leaving a gap around the gulley exterior top edges aiding the possible problem of seizure.
The specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Fig.l shows in perspective the parts in which the gully is constructed, the adjustment mechanism shown with a hidden line.
Fig. 2 shows the side view of the gully fully retracted (Drawn in section).
Fig. 3 shows the end elevation of the gully fully retracted (Drawn in section).
Fig. 4 shows tie mechanism for means of adjustment (Drawn in section).
ADJUSTABLE ROAD GULLY & COVER.
Refering to the drawings, the gully comprises an outer section 'C' an inner moving section'B', drop in gully grate 'D' and wedges 'E' for height adjustment and and support.
In order to adjust the gully heigllt, grating 'D' must be removed, the inner section 'B' is then pulled up - shown by arrow 12, Fig 4. or removed completely by hand using the supporting ledge for grate 'D' as hand grips 'N' Fig 4.
llle means for securing section 'B' to the required height is obtained by placing wedges 'E' into position as shown in Fig 1, one on top of the other while section "B' is held up or removed. Section 'B' may then be lowered down on to the newly positioned wedges 'E' and finally
gully grate 'D' is replaced down into section'B'.
Claims (3)
- ADJUSTABLE ROAD GULLY & COVER.CLAIMS 1.An adjustable road gully and inspection cover comprising an outer section and an adapted inner section with means of adjustment being able to slide upwards and downwards with removeable grate.
- 2.An adjustable road gully or inspection cover as claimed in Claim 1 wherein an inner section slides upwards and downwards for means of adjustment.
