Abstract

A tonometer stand enables a Goldmann type applanation tonometer to rest horizontally on a platform 14 so that the biprism is submerged to an adjustable depth in pots containing the disinfecting solution. The tonometer stand consists of a base 10 which has cut outs 20 & 22 for positioning of the pots containing the disinfecting solutions. A height adjusting mechanism 12 allows the platform 14 to be adjusted in height to enable the biprism to be immersed in the solutions to the correct depth. Side supports 18 secure the tonometer preventing horizontal displacement of the instrument. <IMAGE>

Description

TONOMETER STAND This invention relates to a Tonometer Stand.
Goldmann type appIanation tonometers are used in Ophthalmology for measuring the intraocular pressure of the eye. Because the biprism makes contact with the eye it has to be disinfected before being used on another patient.
One currently used method to disinfect the tonometer's biprism is immersing it in a disinfecting solution. This requires the biprism to be removed from the tonometer. This is fiddly, time consuming, introduces the possibility of contamination and often results in the users hands being contaminated by the disinfection.
According to the present invention there is provided a stand for the Goldmann type Applanation tonometer comprising of an adjustable platform on which the tonometer rest allowing the biprism to be positioned in the disinfecting solution which is contained in a receptacle resting on the baseplate.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows side view of the stand with the details of the height adjustment mechanism and position of the pots for the disinfecting and washing fluids.
Figure 2 shows a rear view demonstrating the Goldmann type applanation tonometer supports.
Referring to the drawing the Tonometer Stand comprises of a base plate 10, a height adjusting mechanism 12 and a platform 14 on which a Goldmann type applanation tonometer rests.
The height adjusting mechanism 12 consists of a solid core sliding within a sleeve with a thread screw 16 to secure the height. The height is adjusted so that the biprism is immersed to a satisfactory depth in disinfecting solution contained in the galley pots which rest in the cut outs 20. The base plate 10 may be angled to aid immersion of the biprism. The base plate 10 contains cut outs 20 & 22 for securing the galley pots which will contain the solutions used in the disinfection process. The platform 14 has vertical supports 18 which secure the tonometer which rests between them.

Claims (5)

1. A Tonometer Stand comprising of an adjustable platform on which a Goldmann type applanation tonometer can rest so that the biprism can be positioned in the disinfecting solution which is contained in a receptacle resting on the baseplate.
2. A Tonometer Stand as claimed in 1 wherein the height of the platform which the tonometer body rests on can be adjusted.
3. A Tonometer Stand as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the platform is angled to aid immersion of the biprism in the disinfecting solutions.
4. A Tonometer Stand as claimed in claim 1 wherein the baseplate contains restraints to prevent the pots containing the solutions from being easily dislodged.
5. A Tonometer Stand substantially as described herein with reference to figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawing.
