Abstract
A permanent mold casting mold releasing agent comprising a mixture of a mold releasing base material, which is an inorganic compound, with an organic compound, at least the mold releasing base material being of powdery or granulated form. This mold releasing agent allows production of castings of high quality, with good workability and without adversely affecting environmental situations.
Description
PERMANENT MOLD CASTING POWDERY MOLD RELEASING AGENT This invention relates
to a mold releasing agent which, in use, is sprayed onto an inner surface of a molding die for permanent mold.
A permanent mold casting method is utilised widely in the manufacture of, for example, various parts for automobile and electrical equipment, because cast parts of high precision can be manufactured continuously and in large quantities by this method. In this permanent casting method, a mold releasing agent is used in order to prevent the molding die from directly contacting the molten metal to be molded. This serves to avoid seizure and improve release of the molded product from the mold or die.
Permanent mold casting mold releasing agents are generally classified into two principal groups: mold releasing agents having heat resistance and heat insulation and a mold releasing agent to provide cast surfaces of good appearance, smooth flow of molten metal and stable contraction etc. The permanent mold casting mold releasing agent is coated on die surfaces after appropriate layers have been formed on the surfaces.
Considerable skill has been required for coating a conventional permanent mold casting with a mold releasing agent for diecasting. Coating work carried out by a worker of poor skill would cause unpredictable displacement of the mold releasing agent coating to produce a large amount of defective products during operation of the mass-production or assembly line. Therefore, the conventional permanent mold casting mold releasing agent has generally been applied by hand by a skilled worker. However, productivity and quality of products have been variable due to the difference between the abilities of mold releasing agent coating workers and difficulties have occurred especially in the mass-production line.
For this reason, the need has arisen for a permanent mold casting mold releasing agent which enables the coating work to be performed by an automated spraying device. The coating work can be fully carried out, dispersion of coated states on the coating work can be avoided and uniform quality of resulting products can be achieved by this mold releasing agent independently of the skill of coating worker.
This invention has been made on the basis of earnest studies and various systematic experiments in consideration of the foregoing points. An object of this invention is to provide a permanent mold casting mold releasing agent which can reduce the likelihood of seizure and the occurrence of internal defects in the molded products, enables good separation of products from dies, can be removed from internal surfaces of dies and external surfaces of products, can control generation of gas during casting operation, and can be used to provide molded products of uniform quality independently of the skill of the coating worker by fully performing a coating work so as to avoid a dispersion of coated states on every time of the work.
According to the invention there is provided a permanent casting mold releasing agent for spray application onto an inner surface of a molding die which comprises a mixture of a powdery or granulated mold releasing base material which is an inorganic compound as a lubricant in solid form with an organic compound imparting an adhesive property to the mold releasing base material, wherein either both compounds are in powdery or granulated form, or the mold releasing base material is coated with the organic compound.
It is a particular feature of this invention that the mold releasing base material is of powdery or granulated form.
It is effective to select an organic compound in an amount of, in relation to inorganic compound, from 0.1 up to weight percent. This amount is preferred because the adhesive effect of the inorganic compound to metal mold insides is not so satisfactory when the content is less than 0.1 weight percent. Conversely, build-up occurs so that there is difficulty in removing the mold releasing agent from the metal mold insides, i.e. a decrease in mold releasing efficiency or a worsening of dimensional accuracy of the molded product when the content is larger than 45 weight percent.
There is no limitation as regards mold releasing base materials for use in the present invention, provided that they comprise a solid inorganic compound as a lubricant.
Generally, any of the following: a boron nitride, mica, metal oxide, silicon nitride, sulfur compound, fluoride, talc, boron compound and/or a phosphorus compound, are preferred. However, other well known solid lubricants, which have conventionally been used as mold releasing agents may be used, such as molybdenum disulfide, graphite etc. All these inorganic compounds have powdery or granulated form, and either one substance is used or two or more substances of those just mentioned may be used in combination.
Further, there is no special limitation as regards the organic compounds suitable for use in the present invention, provided they have characteristics of imparting adhesive and bonding properties to the foregoing inorganic compounds. Gernerally, metal soaps or high molecular weight/polymer compounds are preferred. Carboxylic acid salts with sodium, calcium, barium, lithium, potassium, magnesium or zinc may be used as suitable metal soaps. Polyethylene, polypropylene, epoxy resin, silicon resin, phenol resin, acrylate resin, alkyd resin or polystyrene may be used as suitable high molecular weight/polymeric compounds. These organic compounds are either mixed with a mold releasing base material when in a powdery or granulated form or, alternatively, are 4 mixed with the base material when in a heated molten state. Accordingly, in a mold releasing agent according to the present invention, either both the mold releasing base material and the organic compound are in a powdery or granulated form, or the powdery or granulated mold releasing base material is coated with the organic compound.
The above-mentioned organic compounds may be used either alone or in combination. Suitably a combination of a metal soap with a high molecular compound may be used.
In a permanent casting powdery mold releasing agent according to the present invention, the mold releasing base material, at least, is in a powdery or granulated form so that the product is separated from the metal mold's inner surface by at least one particle diameter of the mold releasing base material, where the mold releasing agent adheres to the mold surface. The mold releasing agent adheres uniformly to the whole metal mold inside surface so that seizure caused by direct contact of the product with the metal mold inside surface can substantially be avoided. Further, since the mold releasing agent according to this invention comprises an organic compound and an inorganic compound and does not include water, defects due to water remaining on the product inside surface do not arise. Accordingly, the quality of the product can be improved as compared with the prior art.
Moreover, in a mold releasing agent accoiding to the present invention, the mold releasing base material in its powdery or granulated form has minimal water content so that adhesion between the metal mold inside surface and the product is weak. Therefore, the product is readily released from the metal mold. Furthermore, the mold releasing agent can be readily removed both from the metal mold inside surface and from the product surface.
In addition, in a mold releasing agent of this invention, - 5 since the mold releasing base material is of powdery or granulated form, the material is substantially inert and scarcely generates gas even if it is subjected to heat during permanent mold casting.
Moreover, in the mold releasing agent of the present invention, at least its mold releasing agent base material has a powdery or granulated form so that it can be used in the automated spraying device. Accordingly, the coating work in particular for permanent mold casting can be fully performed and the dispersion of coated states on every time of the work can be avoided independently of skill of a coating worker, so that the quality of resulting products can be made more uniform.
According to the present invention, in the permanent mold casting mold releasing agent composed of a mixture of the mold releasing agent base material comprising an inorganic compound with an organic compound, at least the mold releasing agent base material has the powdery or granulated form. Therefore, the following advantages become evident.
(1) The occurrence of seizure and generation of inside defect of cast products of aluminium alloy and zinc alloy etc. obtained by the permanent mold casting method can be reduced so that the quality of the molded products can be improved.
1 (2-) Good separation of the products from the dies can be accomplished, the permanent mold casting mold releasing agent can be removed from internal surfaces of dies and external surfaces of products, and further generation of gas during operation can be minimised. Consequently, the casting work by means of permanent mold casting method can be carried out with better productivity.
(3) The permanent mold casting powdery mold releasing agent can be used in the automated spraying device. Accordingly, the quality of resulting product can always be made uniform independently of skill of the coating worker by fully performing the coating work so that the dispersion of coating states on every time of the work can be avoided.
Most especially, the quality of obtained castings can be improved by employing the organic compound in relation to the inorganic compound in the range of 0.1 to 45 weight percent.
Further, the above-mentioned effect can be particularly enhanced by employing a boron nitride, mica, metal oxide, silicon nitride, sulfur compound, fluoride, talc, boron compound and/or phosphorus compound as the inorganic compound; and by employing a metal soap comprising a carboxylic acid salt with sodium, calcium, barium, lithium, potassium, magnesium or zinc, or a high molecular weight or polymer compound such as polyethylene, polypropylene, epoxy resin, silicon resin, phenol resin, acrylate resin, alkyd resin or polystyrene as the organic compound. Mold releasing agents most suitable for permanent mold casting may be obtained by using two or more kinds of the foregoing inorganic compounds with two or more organic compounds in combination.
Embodiments of the present invention will be described below, but the invention is not limited to these embodiments.
The following mold releasing agents (A) through (E) were prepared. Casting tests based on the permanent casting method were carried out by using these mold releasing agents, and items listed in the table were compared and examined.
Two kinds of mixtures were prepared, firstly, a mixture of an organic compound with an inorganic compound both in powdery or granulated form, and, secondly, a mixture wherein the organic compound is mixed with the inorganic compound in a heated molten state, for the embodiments (A) through (C) of the present invention.
The two kinds of mixtures were examined and results obtained were the same for the both mixtures. Incidentally, compounds as used for the mold releasing agents (A) through (E) are those available in the market.
(A) First embodiment comprising a mixture of 95 parts of boron nitride (average particle size: 1 to 5 mic-rons) and 5 parts of calcium stearate (B) Second embodiment comprising a mixture of 20 parts of boron nitride, 75 parts of mica and 5 parts of polyethylene (C) Third embodiment comprising a mixture of 50 parts of boron nitride, 45 parts of silicon nitride, 3 parts of barium stearate and 2 parts of polypropylene (D) Boron nitride only (comparison embodiment 1) (E) A prime coating mold lubricant with a major intention of heat insulating effect having an alumina and talc for its major base material, and a finish coating mold lubricant with a major intention of lubrication ability and releasing ability having an alumina, talc and graphite, which is coated on and regulated by the mold when used. (comparison embodiment 2).

Claims (9)
- CLAIMS 1. A permanent mold casting mold releasing agent, for sprayapplication onto an inner surface of a molding die, comprising an inorganic compound as a mold releasing base material and an organic compound which imparts adhesive property to the mold releasing base material, at least the mold releasing base material being in powdered or granulated form.
- 2. A mold releasing agent according to Claim 1 wherein both the inorganic base material and the organic compound are in powdered or granulated form.
- 3. A mold releasing agent according to Claim 1 wherein the inorganic base material is coated with the organic compound.
- 4. A mold releasing agent according to any one of claims 1 to 3 which contains the organic compound at a content of 0.1 to 45 weight percent in relation to the inorganic compound.
- 5. A mold releasing agent according to any preceding claim wherein the inorganic compound is one or more of a boron nitride, a silicon nitride, mica, a metal oxide, a sulfur compound, a fluoride, talc, a boron compound and a phosphorus compound.
- 6. A mold releasing agent according to any preceding claim wherein the organic compound comprises at least one metal soap and/or high molecular weight/polymeric compound.
- 7. A mold releasing agent according to claim 6, wherein the metal soap comprises a carboxylic acid salt of sodium, calcium, barium, lithium, potassium, magnesium or zinc.
- 8. A mold releasing agent according to claim 6 wherein the high molecular compound comprises polyethlene, polpropylene, epoxy resin, silicon resin, phenol resin, acrylate resin, alkyd resin or polystyrene.- 10
- 9. A mold releasing agent substantially as hereinbefore described with referanece to any one of Examples A to C.
