Abstract

A device for use in a water system to reduce or eliminate water hammer. So that water hammer can be reduced or eliminated in a very simple manner, the device includes a body part (10) containing a spring loaded piston (14) so that surges of pressure are at least partially absorbed thereby. The piston (14) is seated to the body (10) by a rolling diaphragm (18) or O- ring. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Water hammer arrestor The invention relates to a device for use in water systems.
It is a particular problem that in water supply systems, both domestic systems and industrial systems, the sudden closing of a tap or valve produces what is known as water hammer, that is to say an unpleasant knocking noise. This is caused by the flow of water in the system being made to come to a sudden stop. The phenomenon is not only unpleasant but damaging because the surges of energy involved can loosen joints in the water system and this in turn can cause damage to property.
The object of the invention is to provide a device whereby water hammer in water supply systems is at least partially absorbed.
According to the invention, there is provided a device for use as a water hammer arrestor in water supply systems, the device including a cylindrical body part containing a spring loaded piston, the arrangement being such that the body part can be connected into a water supply system whereby surges of pressure in the system act against the piston in opposition to the spring pressure, the surges of pressure being at least partially absorbed thereby. The device may also be provided with a sealing element capable of acting as a rolling diaphragm, the piston being a freely sliding fit in the body part.On the other hand, the piston may be provided with at least one O-ring for sealing the piston in the body part and in this case the piston may be provided with a sealing screw and washer, the arrangement being such that when the sealing screw has been slackened, air has been able to escape from beneath the piston as the latter has been entered into the body part, re-tightening of said screw then having sealed the hole in the piston in which said screw is screwthreaded.
In order that the Invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, the same will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:~ Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a device embodying the invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views of somewhat different constructions of such device.
Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, the device there illustrated for use as a water hammer arrestor includes a cylindrical body part 10 one end of which is closed and the other end of which is externally screwthreaded and engaged within a screwthreaded skirt portion of an adaptor member generally indicated 12. The adaptor member is provided with a screwthreaded spigot portion 13 by means of which the device can be connected into a water system for the water pressure in the system to act within the body part.
The cylindrical body part contains a piston element 14 which is acted upon by a coiled compression spring 16. The piston is a freely .sliding fit in the body part but leakage of water past the piston is prevented by a sealing element 18 of initially "top hat" section which has a peripheral outer rim part 20 trapped by a washer 22 when the body part is united with the adaptor member 12. The arrangement is such that when the device has been connected into a water supply system, any surges of pressure which would otherwise cause water hammer are at least partially absorbed by the piston moving within the cylindrical body part. As the piston moves (and it will be understood that the amount of movement is comparatively small) the sealing element 18 is able to behave as a so-called rolling diaphragm.
Referring now to Fig. 2, the device there illustrated is of broadly similar construction to the device described above and like parts are given the same reference numerals. However, in this case, instead of being fitted with a sealing element capable of acting as a rolling diaphragm the piston element is grooved and is provided with a pair of resilient O-rings 24. In addition, so that the piston element is able to be inserted into the cylindrical body part on assembly of the device, the piston element is provided with a sealing screw 26 and washer 28, the arrangement being such that when the sealing screw has been slackened, air has been able to escape from beneath the piston as the latter has been entered into the body part. Retightening of said screw has then sealed the hole in the piston element against further leakage of air either into or from the interior of the body part.
This construction of device operates in just the same way as the previously described embodiment except that the leakage of water into the space in which the spring is disposed is prevented by the O-rings 24.
Referring now to Fig. 3, the device there illustrated is very similar in construction to that just described and like parts are again given the same reference numerals. However, the sealing screw 26 and washer 28 have been omitted. In use of the device, the air which is trapped within the body parts assists the spring 16 in resisting surges of fluid in the system in which the device is connected.
Various other modifications may be made. For example, in the device illustrated in Fig. 2 instead of the sealing screw and washer being provided in the piston element it could be provided in the top face or in the side wall of the body part for the same purpose. Furthermore, in any of the illustrated embodiments, instead of being provided with a screwthreaded spigot portion 13 by means of which it can be connected into a water system, the device may be provided with a plain spigot portion by means of which it can be connected into a water system either by a compression type fitting or by other means. Also, instead of the body part 10 having a blank top face it could be provided with a screwthreaded spigot as 13 or a plain spigot portion by means of which it could be connected to an overflow pipe.
This would be useful in case of failure of seals.
