Description

SPECIFICATION A display device The invention relates to a display device.
According to the invention there is provided a display device for mounting on an exposed surface of a vehicle, comprising a base, securing means of the base whereby the device is securable to an exposed surface of a vehicle, a first display panel extruding from the base from or from near an edge thereof in a direction away from the securing means and joining with a second display panel which extends from the first display panel to the base and is secured thereto at a position spaced from the edge.
Preferably the second display panel is secured to the base at a position in the range between 40%-60% of the dimension thereof as considered in a direction away from the edge. Preferably this dimension will be the length of the base when the base is rectangular.
The first and second display panels may preferably be inclined in the range 60 - 85 with respect to the plane of the base.
The securing means may be a magnet, preferably a flexible magnet.
The device may comprise a blank of foldable material which has respective crease lines about which the blank can be folded to provide the base and first and second display panels, and a connection means whereby the second display panel may be secured to the base in the erected position of the device.
The connection means may comprise to clip carried by the base and which has a part which connects with complementary means of the second display panel to secure that panel to the base.
The clip may be of U-shape the web of which is bent over the limbs and is spaced therefrom to form the part which is received in a cut-out in the second display panel.
The blank may be formed from a fluted board material, and the legs may be received in spaced parallel flutes of the base to mount the clip in the base.
In the erected display device, the clip may be positioned in the middle third df the lateral extent of the base.
The second display panel may be joined with a further panel which is bent about a crease line and which overlies the base between the first and second display panels.
The blank is preferably made of plastic material.
The clip is preferably a metal clip.
The first and second display panels, and/or the surface of the base projecting from the second display panel onthe side remote from the first display panel, may carry a legend, logo, device etc for advertising, promotion and/or advice or education.
a display device embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display device accordingto the invention; Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the display device of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of the display device of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a bottom view of the display device of Figures 1,2 and 3; Figure 5 is, to a smaller scale than the other Figures, a plan view of a blank from which the display device of Figures 1 and 2 is erected; Figure 6 is a perspective view of a securing clip for use in the display device of Figures 1 to 4 and with the blank of Figure 5 to erect the display device of Figures 1 to 4; and Figure 7 is a side view of the display device in a collapsed condition for storage or transport.
referring to the drawings, there is shown a display device 1 for mounting on an exposed surface, such as a metallic roof of a car (not shown), comprising a base 2, securing means such as a flexible magnet 3, of the base whereby the device 1 is removably secured to the exposed surface of the vehicle, a first display panel 4 extending from the base 2 from (or near) an edge 5 thereof in a direction away from the magnet 3, the panel 4 joining with a second display panel 6 (via an intermediate part 7) which effectively extends from the panel 4 to the base 2 and is secured thereto at a position spaced from the edge 5; in the embodiment shown the second panel 6 is secured halfway between the edge 5 and an opposite edge 8 of the base 2, which base 2 is rectangular.
The panel 6 is secured to the base 2 by a metal clip 9 (Figure 6) which is of generally U-shape with the web 10 bent back part way over, and spaced in a plane above, the limbs 11 of the 'U'. The free ends of the limbs 11 are inserted in the base 2 and the bent over part of the web 10 passes through a slot 12 in the panel 6, to hold the panel 6 in position. The clip 9 is positioned in the middle-third of the width of the base 2 (and thus of the panel 6) as it has been found that this produces the most advantageous construction.
The display device 1 is made out of a rectangular blank 13 (Figure 5) of light, rigid yet flexible material which can be folded about crease lines 14, 15, 16 and 17 formed therein or thereon. Such a material is that sold under the Registered Trade Mark "CORREX", which is a fluted extruded plastics board structure which comprises two spaced planar face sheets connected by spaced parallel walls at right angles to the sheets. The board structure is made in a continuous extrusion process using an appropriately configured extrusion die.
The crease lines 14-17 effectively partition the blank into four panels 2', 6', 4', 18. The panel 2' comprises the base 2 and has secured to its undersurface as by adhesive the flexible magnet 3. The panel 4' forms the first display panel 4 and the panel 6' forms the second display panel 6, which itself is joined with the fourth panel 18 which in the erected position lies between the two panels 4 and 6 on the base 2 and provides rigidity to the structure. The cut-out 12 is formed in the blank material along the crease line 17. Also, there are formed two holes 19 on the upper surface (as viewed) of the base 2 mid-way between its front and rear edges 5 and 8 and at a spacing which is equivalent to the spacing between the limbs 11 of the U-shaped retaining clips 9.The limbs 11 then pass down spaced flutings of the material ofthe blank 13 and are concealed therein.
The blank 3 is folded for storage or transport as shown in Figure 7, with the clip 9 in position in the base 2 so that the U-shaped bent-over part of the web 10 protrudes from the base 2, through the holes 11.
To erect the display device 1, the collapsed blank 13 is opened out and folded about the crease lines 14-17 so thatfourth panel 18 overlies the base 2, in contacttherewith and so that the free edge of the panel 18 terminates at or adjacent the inside (as viewed in Figure 1 ) surface of the panel 4, with the clip partially withdrawn to enable this folding operation to be completed. The display panel 6 then has the desired erected configuration of Figure 1, and to retain it in this desired shape the clip 9 is pushed fully home so that the bent-over part of the web 10 passes through the cut-out 12 to overlie the panel 18 and thus hold the second panel 6 in the inclined erected position shown.
The display device 1 can then be installed on the metal roof of a car, with the free end 8 of the base 2 pointing in the forward direction; the magnet 3 holds the device 1 firmly in position, even at high speeds at least as high as the speed limit presently appertaining. The device 1 stays in position even at these high speeds. This is because as the wind force strikes the inclined front face of the display panel 6, this panel 6 tends to deflect the wind, but any tendency for this panel to be itself deflected and tilted backwards (towards the panel 4) results in a downward element of force around the whole perimeterofthis base, and thus of the magnet 3, particularly at the leading edge so enhancing the magnetic effect and preventing this leading edge from lifting. As the leading edge is not lifted, no wind can get underneath to "shear" the device 1 from the car roof.
When it is desired to remove the display device 1 from the car roof, it is merely lifted therefrom, and if desired folded up to the Figue 7 configuration for storage etc.
The outer faces of the display panels 4 and 6 carry any suitable desired logo, legend or advertisements.
Thus the surfaces could show a large "L" in red to indicate that the car is being driven by a learner driver. Also, the base could have a logo, legend or advertisements, for viewing from the air.
The logo, legend or advertisements can be applied to the display device by any suitable means such as screen printing.
