Abstract
Sheets of lining material 12 are secured to the structure by separable and re-engageable fastening strip material 14, e.g. cooperating hook- and-loop-pile fastening fabric. The strip material 14 may carry a masked adhesive layer on each part 14a, 14b to fix the parts to the lining material and to the structure respectively. The material may be stored rolled up to the roof apex. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION
Shading and insulation methods and systems
SPECIFICA TION
This invention relates to methods and systems for use in shading and/or insulating structures, such as buildings, which are exposed to sunlight or which are to be protected against heat loss. The invention is particularly applicable to the shading and/or insulation of greenhouses, sun-rooms, etc, which are largely made of glass. However, the invention is not limited to use with greenhouses or like structures, and has wide applicability to the shading and/or insulation of any glazed structure. The term "glazed" is used to denote not only glass but also any plastics or other material used as a replacement or substitute for glass.
Various methods are known for shading greenhouses and like structures, some of which involve the use of netting, usually green in colour, which can be rolled down over the glass and which is secured to the greenhouse structure by clips or wires.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a shading and/or insulating system which is inexpensive and extremely easy to install and maintain.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a shading and/or insulating system for installation within a building structure, comprising one or more pieces of lining material having shading and/or thermal insulating properties and one or more pieces of separable and re-engageable fastening strip material, said strip material having a first part adapted to be secured to the lining material and a second part adapted to be secured to the structure to be lined.
Also in accordance with the invention there is provided a method of lining a building structure for shading and/or insulating purposes, comprising securing one or more pieces of separable and re-engageable fastening strip material either to a piece of lining material having shading and/or insulating properties or to the internal surface of the building structure, causing the strip material to present an exposed adhesive surface, and bringing the adhesive surface into contact either with the building structure or with the lining material respectively.
The sheet material is preferably a woven polyethylene material, and the separable fastening strip material is preferably a touch-andclose strip material such as that made and sold under the Registered Trade Mark "Vel cro The accompanying schematic drawing illustrates how a greenhouse for example can be shaded in accordance with the present invention. In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general view of a greenhouse fitted with shading and/or insulating material in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 shows the mounting of the fastening strip on the sheet material; and
Figure 3 shows the sheet material rolled up for storage at the apex of the greenhouse roof.
Fig. 1 of the drawings shows a greenhouse
10 in which a number of the glass panels are lined by lengths of shading material 12. These lining pieces of shading material are preferably sheets of green woven polyethylene, although other plastics materials can alternatively be used. As is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the sheet material 12 is secured either to the glass or to the framework of the greenhouse, whether wood or aluminium, by strips 14 of two-part separable fastening material.These strips 14 are preferably made of a touch-and-close material such as "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark). Each of the two parts of the fastening strip, i.e. a first part 14a associated with the shading material 12 and a second part 14b associated with the support structure such as the glass, is provided with an adhesive backing which is normally covered by a masking strip which can be peeled off for use. Lengths or pieces of the fastening strip first part 14a are mounted at the corners or along the edges of the plastics sheet material 12 and the other element 14b of the separable fastening strip is secured by the adhesive backing at the appropriate locations on the glass or frame. Then, simply by pressing the two parts 14a, 14b of the fastening strip together, the sheet material is held in position over the glass panel.In practice it has been found desirable to provide strips of the fastening material along the edges of the shading material, from corner to corner. Fig. 3 illustrates how the sheet material 12 can be rolled up when not in use and held in position, ready for use, at the apex of the roof of the greenhouse by the use of additional "Velcro" strips. As shown in Fig. 3, a strip 14' or pieces of the separable fastener material is/are provided on the shading material 12 spaced from but parallel to the edge at which the strip 14 is positioned. When the shading material is rolled up, then this strip 14' will be presented on the outside of the roll to permit attachment to the facing interior surface of the greenhouse.
Although the present invention is primarily intended for use with shading material, it is also applicable for use with sheets of plastics material, rigid, semi-rigid or flexible, if one wishes to insulate a building against heat loss.
The interior of the structure can be lined with the plastics material using strips of the separable two-part fastener to mount the plastics material, in the same way as described above.
It will be appreciated that, in use, the separable two-part strip material can either be stuck on to the shading/insulating lining material and then presented to the support struc ture, or alternatively it can be stuck on to the support structure and the lining material pressed on to it. Subsequent removal of the lining material with the one part 14a of the fastening material is then extremely simple. It can also be re-hung again very quickly and easily.
Claims (8)
1. A shading and/or insulating system for installation within a building structure, comprising one or more pieces of lining material having shading and/or thermal insulating properties and one or more pieces of separable and re-engageable fastening strip material, said strip material having a first part adapted to be secured to the lining material and a second part adapted to be secured to the structure to be lined.
2. A system as claimed in claim 1, in which the first and second parts of the strip material each have an adhesive backing by means of which they can be secured to the lining material and structure respectively.
3. A system as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the lining material is a plastics material.
4. A system as claimed in claim 3, in which the lining material is a woven polyethylene material.
5. A method of lining a building structure for shading and/or insulating purposes, comprising securing one or more pieces of separable and re-engageable fastening strip material either to a piece of lining material having shading and/or insulating properties or to the internal surface of the building structure, causing the strip material to present an exposed adhesive surface, and bringing the adhesive surface into contact either with the building structure or with the lining material respectively.
6. A method as claimed in claim 5, which includes removing a masking strip from the fastening strip material thereby to expose the adhesive surface.
7. A system as claimed in claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawing.
8. A method as claimed in claim 5, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the drawing.
