Abstract
Panel 10 has cast therein fixing attachments 12. Each attachment 12 has an internally threaded socket 14 encapsulated, apart from the open end 16, by a resiliently flexible sleeve 18. Open end 16 can receive a bolt 24 which connects panel 10 to the building frame 26 by a bracket 28. A bar 22 prevents displacement of attachment 12 within panel 10. By having flexibility in the attachment, the facility for movement and dimensional changes is ensured and is not reliant on correct installation on site. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Fixing of panels
This invention relates to apparatus for use in the fixing of panels, cladding and other like members to frames or structures and to cladding, panels and other like members incorporating such apparatus. The term cladding can refer not only to wall elements but also to roof cladding elements and the term panels includes sun control devices such as perforated sun screens, sun shades and canopies.
In many applications there are used cladding and panels which are subject to relative dimensional changes after fixing to frames or structures, normally created by thermal or moisture effects. If a panel which is susceptible to dimensional movement is rigidly fixed to a frame or structure, then the movement is restrained and this in turn can lead to distress or structural failure of the panel.
GRC (Glass Reinforced Cement) has a thermal expansion in the order of 20 X 10 6/0C and can exhibit a reversible moisture movement of 0.75%. Thus, in a three metre long panel it can be seen that for a 70"C change in temperature there would be a 4.2mm change in length. The change in length with respect to moisture movement would be 4.5mm from fully dry to totally saturated. Thus in theory it would be possible to obtain combined moisture and thermal movements of the order of 8.7mm for a 3 metre long panel. In practice this would only occur with a change from cold and dry to hot and wet conditions and for the
United Kingdom climate moisture and thermal effects would normally tend to counteract each other.
Previously proposed methods of fixing panels to frames to allow for movement include the provision of washers formed of a flexible material located between the panel and the frame and secured by a bolt or like member passing therethrough. However, if the bolt is overtightened when the panel is being installed, the capacity for movement is reduced or eliminated. Thus correct installation is essential and is reliant on the competance of the site personnel to utilise such a relatively complicated fixing system. The arrangement is not tolerant to dimensional inaccuracies and cumulative inaccuracies can again result in the fixing becoming rigid rather than flexible.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the disadvantages such as outlined above.
According to the present invention there is provided apparatus for use in connecting members together, the apparatus being adapted to be located within one of the members and having securing means for co-operation with a component which can be provided for connecting the members together, and means substantially surrounding the securing means and being formed of a resiliently flexible material, whereby to absorb dimensional changes in the members without affecting the co-operation between the securing means and the connecting component.
Preferably the securing means comprises an internally threaded socket with one open end exposed by the surrounding means, the socket and surrounding means being adapted to locate in said one member such that the open end of the socket is accessible from an external face of said one member.
Alternatively, the securing means comprises a component having an externally threaded part which is exposed by the surrounding means, the component together with the surrounding means being adapted to locate in said one member such that the externally threaded part of the component protrudes from the external face of said one member.
Preferably also means are provided for preventing displacement of the apparatus when located in said one member, and may comprise a rigid component which extends through the securing means and the surrounding means to project beyond each side thereof, or a rigid component connected with the securing means to project beyond each side thereof.
The sleeve may be formed of an alkali-resistant material such as rubber or latex or polyurethane.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a part section through a panel connected with a building frame and incorporating a first embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a part section through a panel incorporating a modified apparatus;
Fig. 3 is a part section through a panel incorporating a further modified apparatus;
Fig. 4 is a part section through a panel incorporating a further embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention;
Fig. 6 is a part section through a panel incorporating a yet further embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention; and
Fig. 7 is a part section through a panel incorporating a still further embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention.
Referring to Fig. 7 of the drawings, a panel 10 preferably formed from Glass Reinforced
Cement (GRC) has at least one fixing attachment 12 cast into the GRC during the manufacture of the panel 10.
The attachment 12 comprises an internally threaded open ended socket 14 which is encapsulated apart from the open end of the socket 16 by a sleeve 18. The socket 14 and the sleeve 18 are cast into the material of the panel 10 such that the open end 16 of the socket 14 is flush with the open end of the sleeve 18 and is flush with an external face 20 of the panel 10 to be accessible from externally of the panel. A bar 22 extends radially through oversized aligned holes in the wall of the socket 14 and through the sleeve 18 and projects outwardly from each side thereof.
The bar 22 is keyed into the GRC so as to prevent displacement of the attachment 12 within the material of the panel 10.
In use a bolt 24 can connect the panel 10 to a building frame or structure 26 by means of a bracket 28. One leg of the bracket 28 is secured to the socket 14 by means of the bolt 24 inserted in the socket 14 and the other leg to the building frame 26. In this described embodiment the other leg of the bracket 28 is attached to the building frame 26 by means of welding to a previously cast in plate 30. There are of course other methods to make the connection to the building frame, common examples being expanding bolts and cast in channels. The use of a shim pack 31 ensures that the weight of the panel 10 is transferred onto the building frame 26 directly and not onto the fixing attachment 12.
The fixing of the panel in the way described allows for both vertical and horizontal movement and by having the flexibility in the fixing attachment itself, the facility for movement is ensured and is not reliant on the method of connection of the bracket 28 to the building frame 26. The provision of the bar 22 provides a positive restraint against wind loading.
There is thus provided an arrangement where the flexibility is inherent in the panel construction and enables easy and quick installation on site and avoids the requirement for the use of a number of components which can otherwise be easily lost or misused.
It will be appreciated that the invention can be applied to cladding and other similar members as well as panels and may be used in panels or any other such members formed of a material other than GRC.
In a modification (Fig. 2) for use when the face of the panel 10 is smooth and flat, the open end of the socket 14 may be recessed relative to the open end of the sleeve 18, the latter being flush with the face of the panel.
With this arrangement when a bolted connection is made there is no tendancy for the apparatus to be stressed against the surrounding material by the action of tightening the bolt. A cast in washer 32 may be provided at the open end of the socket 14 in a recessed shoulder at the open end of the sleeve 18.
In a further modification (Fig. 3) where the fixing attachment 12 is to be used on a nonsmooth or flat surface 20 of the panel 10, the socket 14 protrudes slightly from the sleeve 18. This ensures that when the bolted connection is made the socket 14 is in contact with the fixing bracket 28 and thus the action of tightening the bolt 24 does not stress the apparatus against its surrounding material.
In certain applications the fixing attachment 12 has to be incorporated into thin sections of the cladding or panel 10. For this purpose there is provided a further embodiment of the invention as shown in Fig. 4. In all other embodiments like reference numbers are used to represent like parts with the first embodiment.
In the Fig. 4 embodiment the socket 14 is in the form of an internally threaded tube secured, for example by welding, to a plate 34, preferably formed from the same material as the tube. The sleeve 18 surrounds both the socket 14 and the plate 34, apart from the open end of the socket 14. Restraint against displacement of the socket 14 is provided by the laterally extending plate 34 and thus a socket of shorter axial length than the socket of the previous embodiment can be utilised without the necessity of a fixing bar. It should be appreciated that the socket 14 of this embodiment can be modified in the same way as the first embodiment and as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In a further embodiment as shown in Fig. 5, the securing means may be in the form of a stud 36 providing at one end an externally threaded bar 38, the sleeve 18 surrounding the stud 36 but exposing the threaded bar 38.
The bar 22 extends through the stud 36 and the sleeve 18 in the same manner as in the first embodiment. When the fixing attachment is cast into the material of a panel the threaded bar 38 protrudes from the external face of the panel and a locking nut is provided for mounting on the bar 38 to connect the panel to a building frame or structure.
Figs. 6 and 7 show further embodiments of fixing attachments which utilise a threaded bar. In Fig. 6 the securing means comprises a straight bar 40 which has an externally threaded part 42 towards one end and at the other end is secured, for example by welding, to a plate 44 which extends laterally of the bar 40. The sleeve 18 surrounds the plate 44 and a section of the bar 40 whereby to expose the threaded part 42. When cast into the material of the panel 10 the threaded bar 40 protrudes from the surface 20 thereof, the plate 44 preventing displacement of the fixing attachment. In Fig. 7 a bar 46 is turned through 90 and provides one leg 48 having an externally threaded part 50 and another leg 52 extending at substantially right angles to the leg 48. The sleeve 18 encapsulates the bar 46 but allows the threaded part 50 to be exposed whereby when the fixing attachment is cast into the material of the panel 10 the threaded part 50 protrudes from the surface 20 thereof. The configuration of the fixing attachment provides for restraint against displacement. In each of the Figs. 6 and 7 embodiments a locking nut is provided for mounting on the respective threaded bar to connect the panel to a building frame or structure.
In the selection of the correct materials for the socket there are many factors to take into consideration, perhaps the most important being the type of panel or cladding containing the fixing and the corrosive nature of the environment to which the cladding or panel will be subjected. Suitable materials for the socket would be stainless steel, phospor bronze, aluminium bronze, silicon aluminium bronze and copper. In addition to the above there is mild steel which can be protected by zinc coating.
However it is envisaged that other materials, both metallic and non-metallic, may be used.
The restraint bar will normally be manufactured from the same material as the socket, but in certain cases economic consideration may well lead to a mild steel bar being used.
Again the choice of material will depend on similar factors to those dictating the choice of the socket.
The sleeve may be formed from any resiliently flexible material such as rubber or latex, either natural or artificial. The flexible material should be resistant to the alkalis produced by the hydration of the cementitious material into which it is cast. The hardness of the flexible material will again depend on end use but typically will be in the range A"35--A"80 (SHORE HARDNESS). A two pack cold curing polyurethane has proved to be a suitable material for use and is used where the sleeve and socket are formed integrally.
Where the sleeve is produced separately then a grade of polyurethane suitable for injection moulding can be used.
Claims (20)
1. Apparatus for use in connecting members together, the apparatus being adapted to be located within one of the members and having securing means for co-operation with a component which can be provided for connecting the members together, and means substantially surrounding the securing means and being formed of a resiliently flexible material, whereby to absorb dimensional changes in the members without affecting the co-operation between the securing means and the connecting component.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the securing means comprises an internally threaded socket with one open end exposed by the surrounding means, the socket and surrounding means being adapted to locate in said one member such that the open end of the socket is accessible from an external face of said one member.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the open end of the socket is flush with a surrounding face of the surrounding means.
4. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein the open end of the socket is proud of a surrounding face of the surrounding means.
5. Apparatus according to claim 2, wherein a surrounding face of the surrounding means is proud of the open end of the socket.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the securing means comprises a component having an externally threaded part which is exposed by the surrounding means, the component together with the surrounding means being adapted to locate in said one member such that the externally threaded part of the component protrudes from the external face of said one member.
7. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein the component has a straight configuration.
8. Apparatus according to claim 6, wherein a part of the component within the surrounding means is turned at an angle relative to the externally threaded part to prevent displacement of the apparatus when located in said one member.
9. Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein means are provided for preventing displacement of the apparatus when located in said one member.
10. Apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the means for preventing displacement comprises a rigid component which extends through the securing means and the surrounding means to project beyond each side thereof.
11. Apparatus according to claim 9, wherein the means for preventing displacement comprises a rigid component connected with the securing means to project beyond each side thereof.
12. Apparatus according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the surrounding means comprises a sleeve which is formed of an alkali-resistant material.
13. Apparatus according to claim 12, wherein the sleeve is formed of rubber or latex.
14. Apparatus according to any of claims 1 to 12, wherein the securing means and the surrounding means are integrally formed.
15. Apparatus according to claim 14, wherein the securing means and the surrounding means are formed of polyurethane.
16. A member provided with at least one apparatus as described in any of the preceding claims.
17. A member according to claim 16, which is formed of glass reinforced cement with said at least one said apparatus moulded therein.
18. Apparatus for use in connecting members together, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
19. A member provided with at least one apparatus according to claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
20. Any novel subject matter or combination including novel subject matter herein dis closed, whether or not within the scope of or relating to the same invention as any of the preceding claims.
