Abstract

215,399. Hetzel, F. V. Nov. 7, 1922. Chain-wheels.-A link-chain of the type in which the joints comprise pins engaging sockets, is employed in conjunction with sprocket wheels having teeth adapted to engage the external surfaces of the socket members, the operative face of each tooth being formed with a straight flat portion on which the chain is adapted to ride as it stretches or wears. The pressure angle or inclination of such straight flat portion increases with the diameter or number of teeth in the wheel, whilst the length thereof is proportionate both to the diameter or number of teeth and the maximum permissible stretch of the chain. A clearance is provided between the teeth sufficient to permit considerable irregularity in the pitch of the chain. In Figs. 2 and 4, portions of sixtoothed and forty-eight toothed wheels respectively are shown. The flat portion 4 of each tooth connects a root curve 5 and a top curve 6, the outer surfaces of the sockets 10 of the links being shaped to conform more or less to the root curve 5. The pressure angle is defined as the angle b between the line 11, connecting the centres of two pins 9 and the perpendicular 12 from the centre of one pin to the flat portion of the tooth engaging therewith. The Specification contains an investigation of the distribution of load and tooth pressures in the several links of a chain passing round a chain wheel and supplies data for the determination of the pressure angles and flat working surfaces.
