Selvages, special, fabrics with.-Selvages are formed on fabrics of the kind in which the wefts a, Fig. 1, each consist of a single or double measured length of thread which is drawn into the shed by hooks, clamps, hook shuttles, &c., by weaving a separate selvage weft e into the cut ends of the wefts and the warps b at the borders of the fabric. A selvage weft loop f may be inserted with each shot of weft a as shown. with each alternate pick, or after every third pick. The selvage thread e is inserted into the fabric during the weaving of the latter by a curved hook 6, Figs. 3, 4 and 6, having an eye through which weft e passes from a bobbin, and a co-operating needle 20. The hook 6 is secured to a spring-controlled rod 3 slidably mounted for example on a drum 1 on the temple and is oscillated by a rack and pinion from a cam on the tappet-shaft. The needle 20 is reciprocated vertically by a cam on the tappet-shaft and is guided in an arm 27 on the lay, a spring normally holding it towards the right as shown in Fig. 3. In operation, the hook 6 passes a loop of selvage weft e through the shed, the end of the loop projecting above the warps as shown in Fig. 6 The needle 20 is then raised and retains the loop after the hook 6 has been withdrawn. After a weft a has been inserted, the reed 18 beats up and moves the needle 20 and the rod hook 6 towards the fell of the fabric, the needle 20 being lowered just before the. threads are finally beater up.
