Abstract

A clamping device is provided for holding non-uniform work pieces or clamping a slide in a slideway, comprising a row of wedges (33) in a guide track, with force transmitting members (36) between adjacent wedges. Closure together of the wedges along the track, or unequal pressure on the force transmitting members, causes certain of the force transmitting members to be moved perpendicular to the track by the cam action of the adjacent wedge members. There is thus obtained a substantially equal clamping action along the length of the row, whatever the length or shape of the track. The clamping device is particularly suited to replacing a gib strip in a machine tool provided with a slide. <IMAGE>
