Abstract

An electro-optic modulator array comprises a sheet 10 of polycrystalline ceramic material (PL2T) with electric field induced birefringements and a plurality of electrodes 13 provided on (a single surface of) said sheet to form apertures 15 therebetween (on to which apertures in use respective polarized light beams 16 are directed) wherein the local thickness t of said sheet depends upon the width A of an aperture such that the effect of cross talk between adjacent ones of the apertures is substantially reduced. Preferably t</=A. As shown t or A are constant, but A will vary for a tapered sheet. <IMAGE>
