Abstract

A thermoplastic or thermosetting synthetic plastics material or rubber is subjected to vibration as it is forced through a restricted flow path eg. die 4 or runner 27, 28 to produce an extrudate or a moulding. The vibration device (9) (23) is reduces the resistance to movement of the polymer through the path and reduces the orientation, in a single direction of the structure of the polymer in the finished extrudate or moulding. The vibration device may comprise a vibrator (9) attached to a die 4, or a mould part (see vibrator 17 in Fig. 4 not shown). The vibration device may comprise a mandrel (22 Fig. 3 not shown) reciprocating within a die, or a plunger (25) (19, Fig. 2, not shown) reciprocating within a body (23) (17, Fig. 2 not shown) positioned between the extruder and die (Fig. 2 not shown) or injector and mould (Fig. 5). Tubes and films may be extruded. <IMAGE>
