Abstract

The invention relates to the manufacture of cables, and is of particular utility in the manufacture of coaxial cables. To measure the consistency of the thickness of an extruded dielectric material (14) over the central conductor (10) of a part-formed coaxial cable (16), the cable is passed between capacitance plates (22, 24) optionally in a water bath (18). The capacitance between the plates is measured by network (30), and the reactive component of the output is recorded in a recorder (52). The recorder is periodically replayed at a higher speed and the frequency spectrum analysed and displayed on an oscilloscope (58). If the part- formed cable is satisfactory, the outer conductor can then be added. <IMAGE>
