Abstract
In the electrolysis of ClO2 solution to produce chlorite ions in the presence of sodium ions, reversal of the process of chlorite ion production is inhibited at the anode by potentiostatic control and/or by physical separation of the anode from the ClO2 solution. To this end, the effective anode may be sodium amalgam which supplies the sodium ions and which can be maintained at a controlled potential relatively to the ClO2 solution. Cell 21 contains sodium amalgam 22 on steel contact plate 23, anode 28 in compartment 26 and cathode 29 in compartment 27. Potentiostat 30 is connected between negative pole of current source 25 and cathode 29 using reference electrode 31. Alternatively, the cell may be separated into anode and cathode compartments by a membrane permeable to sodium ions, the cathode compartment containing the ClO2 solution and the anode compartment a solution of a sodium salt. <IMAGE>
