Abstract
200,157. Shaw, F. W. March 30, 1922. Gear-cutting.-In a hobbing - machine for generating helical gears an endwise movement is imparted to the hob during its traverse across the work, the gearing between the hob and work being the same as for cutting straight spur gears. Alternatively where this method would necessitate the use of very long hobs, the " creep " of the hob may be effected partly by modification of the change wheel ratios and partly by imparting endwise movement to the hob. The vertically arranged hob saddla 2 is provided with a slide 4 on which the hob saddle is pivotally mounted and the endwise movement of the hob during its vertical traverse is affected by means of a slipper 7 sliding in an adjustably inclined guide 8. In a modification the slide 4 is mounted on an angularly adjustable plate pivoted to the hob saddle. In a further modification the slide 4 may be traversed by means of a screw driven at the required speed. Specification 19932/14 is referred to.
