Abstract
A fishing hook has a shank 10 formed with a spear end 12 for line whipping which also provides a part 12b for retaining bait. The end 12 lies at an angle to the shank 10. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A fishing hook
This invention concerns a fishing hook.
Conventionally the shank end of fish hooks are formed either with an eye for line end tying or with a spade end enabling a line end to be secured by whipping.
An object of this invention is to provide a fish hook having a shank end formed to enable the line end to be whipped on satisfactorily and also to provide a means to assist the retention of bait such as a worm on the hook.
According to the invention a fish hook shank end is formed as a spear like portion which is at an angle of inclination with respect to the axis of the shank, whereby the line end can be whipped to the end leaving a spear-like point portion projecting upwardly and away from the axis of the shank. This point serves as a means for retaining a worm particularly during casting as the point portion holds the worm which is threaded on the hook.
An embodiment of a hook according to the invention and a modification thereof are illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 shows a side view,
Figure 2 shows a front view,
Figures 3 and 4 show respectively front and side views of the shank end to an enlarged scale, and
Figures 5 and 6 show respectively front and side views of a modified shank end to enlarged scale.
As shown in Figures 1 to 4 the hook consists of a shank 10 with barbed hook end 1 The end of the shank is flattened and shaped to a straight sided diamond-like spear end 12 providing a pointed end 1 2a. This flattened portion is set at an angle of inclination to the axis of the shank 10 so that when the line end is whipped on to the flattened portion below its widest part, there remains projecting a substantially V-like spike 12b.
When a worm is threaded on to the hook from the barb end up the shank and beyond the spear end 12, the spike 1 2b serves to retain the worm particularly against the force developed on casting.
Although the spear end is shown directed to the side of the shank opposite to the barbed end, it could be directed to the barbed end side.
The modified embodiment of Figures 5 and 6 is similar apart from the profile of the spear end 12 which in this case has rounded sides.
1. A fishing hook wherein the shank end is formed as a spear like portion which is at an agle of inclination with respect to the axis of the shank, whereby the line end can be whipped to the end leaving a spear-like point portion projecting upwardly and away from the axis of the shank.
2. A fishing hook as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the spear-like portion is integral with the shank end formed by flattening the end of the shank.
3. A fishing hook as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the spear-like portion is of diamond shape.
4. A fishing hook as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the spear-like portion has arcuate shape sides.
5. A fishing hook as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the plane of the spear-like portion is bent outwardly from the side of the shank opposite to the hook portion.
6. A fishing hook as claimed in any preceding claim 1 to 4, wherein the plane of the spear-like portion is bent inwardly from the side of the shank adjacent the hook portion.
7. A fishing hook substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings.
8. A fishing hook substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 5 and 6 of the accompanying drawings.
