Abstract
A depositor, for depositing into moulds traversed beneath it successive charges of confectionery containing particulate solid inclusions, includes a pumping plunger 16 which delivers successive charges of the confectionery to the upper end of a nozzle 23 laterally offset from the plunger. A discharge piston 25 disposed above the nozzle discharges each charge of confectionery from the nozzle downwardly into a mould 14. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus for Depositing Confectionery
It is well known to deposit viscous confectionery into a series of moulds which are traversed in succession beneath the depositor, the latter including a plunger which is reciprocated to deliver successive charges of confectionery from a hopper to a nozzle from which they are deposited into the moulds. Typical confectionery materials which may be so deposited to form individual sweets are toffee, fudge and high boiled sugar.
It is sometimes desired that the sweets should include discrete particles or fragments of solid or semi-solid material, for examples glace cherries, raisins, nuts or jelly. To ensure even distribution of the included material within the confectionery, which constitutes a carrier for it, it is mixed with the carrier material in the hopper. However, there is a tendency for the included material to coagulate in the vicinity of the outlet of the nozzle and this leads to non-uniform distribution of the included material within the carrier material and makes it difficult to produce deposits which are consistent in quantity and weight.
With a view to meeting this difficulty the invention provides a depositor for use in depositing successive charges of such composite confectionery materials comprising a hopper, a nozzle laterally offset from the hopper, a pumping plunger for delivering successive measured charges of the confectionery from the hopper through a channel to the upper end of the nozzle and a discharge piston disposed above the nozzle and operative in timed relationship with the pumping plunger to discharge each charge of composite material downwardly through the nozzle and into a mould.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional elevation of the depositor, showing the parts in the position they occupy prior to discharge of a quantity of confectionery into a mould, and
Figs. 2 to 5 are similar views of the lower portion of the depositor and the mould showing successive stages in operation of the depositor.
The depositor 10 shown in the drawings includes a hopper 11 which contains the composite material 12 to be deposited and operates as described below to deliver charges 13 of the material into moulds 14 which are traversed in succession beneath the depositor by an intermittently moving chain conveyor 1 5. It also includes a plunger 16, which is reciprocated in a sleeve 17, buy a link 18 operated by an arm 19 on a shaft 20 to which oscillation is imparted by a cam (not shown), and a heater 31, beneath the hopper 11 and surrounding the lower portion of the sleeve 17, for maintaining the carrier material in condition suitable for pumping. The material in the hopper 11 obtains access to the sleeve 1 7 through ports 21, which are unmasked by the plunger 1 6 on its suction stroke and closed by the plunger 1 6 on its discharge stroke.
The depositor also includes a nozzle assembly, which consists of a channel 22 leading from the sleeve 17 to a nozzle 23, above which is a sleeve 24 containing a piston 25 which is reciprocated by a link 26 connected to an arm 27 on a shaft 28 which is oscillated by another cam (not shown).
The stroke of the piston 25 extends from a top position, shown in Figs.1,2 and 5 in which its lower end is level with the top of the channel 22, to a bottom position, shown in Fig. 4, in which its lower end has entered the upper portion of the nozzle 23.
Operation of the depositor is as follows:- To commence deposit, the piston 25 is in its upper position shown in Fig. 1, and the plunger 1 6 moves downwards to push material from the hopper 11 through the channel 22 to the nozzle 23, as shown in Fig. 2. When the nozzle 23 is full of material, the piston 25 is moved down as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, thus positively discharging into the mould 14 the material from the area above the nozzle 23. The amount of material so deposited is determined by the stroke of the piston 25.By the time the piston 25 has reached its lowermost position, the plunger 1 6 has started to return to its uppermost position as shown in Fig. 4, and the piston 25 then moves back to its uppermost position creating, as shown in Fig. 5, a slight "suck-back" 29 of undeposited material remaining in the outlet area of the nozzle 23 to ensure breaking of the "tail" 30 of material joining it to the deposited portion.
During the return stroke of the piston 25, the conveyor 1 5 moves the filled mould 14 away from its position beneath the nozzle 23 and brings the next mould to position for filling.
By the use of the piston 25 to positively expel the deposit, the solid or semi-solid inclusions 32 do not collect and jam-up in the nozzle area.
Movement of the piston 25 into the upper portion of the nozzle 23 makes a clear-cut division of the inclusions even shearing through those positioned half-way over the edge of the upper end of the nozzle 23. Positive movement of material out of the nozzle 23 ensures deposits of consistent quantity and weight.
