Abstract
3972. Stefano, A. de. Feb. 16. Field carriages; recoil apparatus.-Relates to carriages of the kind in which the trail is connected to a support anchored to the ground, and consists in making the trail comparatively short and so connected to the support that the gun, even during firing, is free to move relatively to the support. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the short trail a is pivoted at d to the support, which comprises two parallel sides b resting on a spade h shaped as shown and situated practically midway between the wheels g of the gun carriage; with this arrangement, the gun is free to move in a vertical plane about the pivot d, and the carriage together with the support can be trained about the spade. In other forms, the rear end of the trail merely rests in a groove in the support so that the gun is free to move in horizontal as well as in. vertical planes, the sides b of the support diverge rearwards to form a wide base to avoid training the support with the carriage, and the spade is fixed to the support.
